Did you guys notice that both Lec and Sai were quite slow on the straights, especially compared to testing sessions?

It's clear engines were seriously detuned, nowhere near compared to what they did last year. Same for Haas and Sauber. FP2 will be a different story, race conditions require serious setup work.

The car bottomed out on the bumps into T10 and it just let go at the rear

Last winter I posted here that I expected that the new regs incentivised setups that would bottom out cars on kerbs, possibly causing more danger than they intended to get rid of. I was laughed away as ignorant. I think we'll have a talk about this later this season.

Pretty sure Haas was running light in FP1 -- was noted during commentary. Detuned + running light? maybe....

Looked at the onboard from LEC during his lap and that car seemed full of fuel, as a reference, LEC was fairly understeery in T10 when they weren't understeery in testing there and they seemed fine in T1 today.. Balance wise they seem good too, much better than testing.

Since all teams seem to be going for lower DF wings than last year, Ferrari's baseline rear wing seems much more sensible. Yes, they aren't using new monopylon design with slightly more DF, but even that wing is lower DF than last year. Massive improvements with floor of all teams, mighty stuff.

And the first 4 laps from LEC and SAI show remarkably no deg. LEC started with 1.38.9, then 38.6 38.5 and now 37.9, 38.0

The positive thing is that Leclerc didn't complain about anything in particular, outside the clutch issue.
He only asked for flap adjustments (+6 in F1 and + 3 in FP2) and overall he seems more confident compared to testing.

If they are managing on a soft tyre they will always improve for first few laps as the temperature goes into the carcass. You can't be degrading before 4 laps on a long run. They occasionally do in fp/testing but that is when the engineers tell them to go out and just push flat out immediately without caring about the tyres; they do this to understand the way the tyres behave for race strategy (eg in an undercut/overcut situation)

Sure. This wasn't happening in testing, and the lap times are staying consistent, after that 38.0 LEC did a few 37.8 and now lapping in 37.4 and 37.6 right away with another old set of softs.

First long run stint looked a bit sh*t, second looked OK. Sainz having trouble keeping the tires alive. Leclerc better but nowhere near RB.

Next two days will be interesting…
