Hell even if you think Sainz is markedly worse than Leclerc, isn't it great that the "worse" driver is posting good time?
That is exactly my point though. It is great news :)

AMUS says the paddock believes Ferrari are the no. 2
It makes no sense to judge the Ferrari with Sainz at the helm. That would be like judging the Redbull based on Perez today
No, because the disparity between Sainz and Leclerc is nowhere close to Verstappen/Perez. Let’s not start this now.

He is more than a good enough yardstick at this point.
Especially in a race stint.

I am sorry if I came across as rude ( I reread my post and see it too :) ). My point was that the gap with a pointy car between Charles and Carlos was pretty large the last time we saw it (early 2022). So, we will have a clearer picture tomorrow and it is too early to say that RB is 1 second ahead.

Very promising pace. Comparing to Perez and last year it looks amazing. BUT, Perez ran in the heat, and when he did that last year he was nowhere near representative.

Yes Q1 will be the first real test but the car not destroying tires is amazing compared to where they were last year. They must’ve found some downforce?

Yea, its a total insult for someone to say Sainz is a bad driver, let alone comparing the FER pair to a Verstappen/Perez pairing. Perez is just bad. Verstappen has had it very easy thru his entire career with lousy 2nd drivers. Sainz is a pretty good driver and if it were any other year he would have been signed quickly by FER. I doubt SAI will have any issue being signed by another team.

Max did a S-S-H stint last year in the race. His fastest lap was 1:36.236 on Lap 44 on the hard tire. His last stint on the hard tire was definitely about 1:36.5s range. Compared to that, Sainz's last stint today was 1:35.75s with a fastest lap of 1:34.99 so he was definitely about 0.5 second faster than Max's RB in last year's race on average. Not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison but Sainz's run today was stellar and more importantly quite a bit faster than the race winning stint from last year's GP.

Comparing with Max's race stint from last year is misleading. He was simply managing the race after first stint as he had no challengers behind him. Just a stroll in the park that evening.

Yeah, I don't doubt that Max could have gone a bit faster last year. But I don't think Sainz ran full beans today as well. Anyway, my point was that Ferrari have definitely made a great and very significant improvement in their race pace compared to last year.

A major weakness of the SF 23 was the loss of competitiveness compared to the others during the race so it's great to see Sainz doing great laptimes even with less fuel, especially factoring in how much the SF 23 struggled with hard tyres

I agree, it is significantly up the road from where Charles was gonna finish if he didn't have problems however.

Why speculate about it? RB are going to do a race sim tomorrow anyway.

Different conditions though.
