Red Bull RB20

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

RedBull's cooling design philosophy is bring all the coolers as much forward as possible so that the hot air blowing off of them gets time to straighten up before exiting the engine cover. Should be cleaner air flow to the rear wings.
huh???!!! :wtf:

This is what James Allison is implicity refering to. The CoG and weight compromises of brining the coolers forward. They even abandoned their big "centre-line cooler" they had for years.

They are using the heat from the exchangers and blowing another surface. Most likely a result of the unlimited WTTesting for cooling. But that hot air is being sent somewhere, and its not for shiggles. I would love to see the backside of that ductwork

What are those two curved fairings rearwards of the body, just after the side vents and just below the elephant-trunks ?

Rb covers the vertical inlet, but Ferrari does not.

I'm talking about the rear floor not the 2 inlets

Sorry, I didn't see your question. I was just making a comment on the images in the post.

To the question, it's probably the tire temperature sensor that is covered.

The waterslide dips almost early and aggressively like the Williams.

In other pictures it’s a really small opening. Probably tyre temp sensor.

Ferrari's are not for cooling (presumably), but only for the S-duct. This would confirm that Red Bull's vertical inlets are for cooling purposes.

There's a compressor inlet theory floating around as well. I agree that it is only similar in appearance.

Hypothesis 8) and I'm still waiting to see some confirming details. We're at race day today so it won't be until the next venue that new photos will be available.

First view of how they plug the inlets in the garage. Foam insert with cooling hoses into the main inlet, typical. The vertical slot has similar foam jammed into it as well, looks like a sheet inserted edgewise. No hose visible connected to it. The red strip at left is livery, ignore it.

This might rule out that it's an aero duct (S-duct or similar) because: why would you block it off in the garage?

If there's no hose connected to that plug in the vertical slot, then:
-likely not for dedicated cooling flow
-could indicate connection to the main inlet plenum to prevent cool air from the hoses leaking out
-engine intakes get plugged for shipment & garage... although I'm having my doubts about this supposition. The roll hoop looks too large relative to the radiator that's behind it i.e. the roll hoop looking like it's not 100% cooling inlet

GP mentioned a few times "tools" on team radio. Something like "you can use the tools if you need".

Any idea about this tools?
