What was terrible (yet again) was Lance Stroll. If the team have ambition, he has to go ASAP.
They didn't have much choice really. Everyone around them would have saved time pitting under the safety car. Then they would just go backwards on older hard tyres too. They only had a set of soft and medium tyres left at that point (I think) and probably felt they could potentially get better track position on the restart with the soft and then use mediums on the last stint.
Pitting early onto the hard and then having two safety cars essential destroyed their original strategy (medium - hard - medium). So I think what they did had some logical to it.
