This was the track that RedBull was scrutinized for their rear wing flex. Merc should have been here as well. let's see what monitoring is being reviewed this weekend. Red Bull likely working on their version as well but won't be ready or useful until another track with long straights
Reducing the front flexi wing advantage to straights is very reductive and actually ignoring their largest advantage. Their largest benefit comes at tracks with lots of corner variety (Silverstone, Barcelona, Spa) and lowest benefit at tracks with less corner variety (Baku, Singapore). It provides an extra tool to balance the front end across all corner types at once
I might argue the opposite. Its a good chance to observe the wings at high speeds where the flex occurs and correlate it to the speed of the car. Almost a good chance to "calibrate" if you may say so. lots of 90 deg bends and a twisty middle section - Baku offers teams a setup challenge.

Max is still quite off on the straight, even compared to Perez; very quick in S2 though.

I think a few tenths is missing. The car is just not making up enough ground in S1 and S2 for the huge loss in S3. Race will be extremely difficult, I dont see how they're able to overtake anyone or defend the position at all.

F1 tempo will tell us in about half hour or so.

let's hope it's all about engine mode, the car is behaving well in the corners but if they lose that much on the straight they could very well find themself 4th force again

Yeah I mean. No way Red Bull would choose a setup that makes them 0.5 sec slower in S3, it just wouldn't make sense. So it's probably engine mode, they're massively sandbagging, and the upgrades seem to work, car is very stable which is a good sign.

Marko yesterday said that Verstappen was unwilling to go lower on downforce, as he needs it to protect the tires in the race. So I wouldn't think it's purely engine mode.

yeah I kinda suspected it, I wouldn't expect he will magically turn up in quali gaining half second in S3

Its way too much though. On a track which is historically low-deg would you really choose to be a sitting duck on the longest straight of the calendar for slightly better wear performance?

Perez tried to give Verstappen a tow at the end of FP3, but slightly got the timing wrong. I would guess they'll sacrifice him in Q3, if necessary.

I'm starting to see a very difficult race for tomorrow, but let's see.

so Max will take off some downforce, says Marko

seems a last minute call, let's hope it'll pay off
