McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Basically you have to pixel peep to notice any difference. Some of the articles made it seem as if this was significant by labeling a "completely revised floor". From what we can see, this is definitely not a completely revised floor, but they have hinted towards more things coming for Brazil.

McLaren described it as such.

"Floor Body Performance -
Local Load Revised Floor
The floor design has been heavily revised, with
geometric changes in all areas, resulting in an
increase of aerodynamic load across all conditions."

With how they circled it in the document, it's possible the changes are all underneath the car and thus not really visible on photos.

Mexico's air pressure is going to reduce the benefit of any aero device. The wings can be made bigger, but the floor is just going to be less effective by a large margin because there is little more that can be done with it.

Consider that at Mexico, they use the big wings and yet it is considered Monza level downforce where the skinniest of skinny wings run. Downforce levels at Mexico are 25% less than what you would get elsewhere and we do not know yet if when we get to a more normal air density the gains from the change will be linear (25% greater than reported in Mexico in line with air density changes) or if the gains will increase exponentially.

While I can see that reduction in aero load as being accepted, from how the teams describe the effect, is that also true of the floor with negative pressure action in it's area leveraged against the track surface ?

I don't know the answer to that, but it'd interesting to gain others informed views on the topic.

About the floor in general, the production of a "new" floor is a very big commitment.

Modelled in 60% size, with attendant tunnel testing and all that entails before even heading toward a manufacturing period of full sized, track ready item. Thats a big cost in budget, time and WT application, certainly not appreciated on here in many comments just how involved that process is.

Possibly some edge detail changes involve much shorter lead and evaluation, but many seem to expect upgrades flowing out of the factory at one hell of a rate.

Given that we know that the volume and speed of air going through the floor directly affects its performance, you'd certainly think so. But it'd be interesting to find out if the floor was in fact as effective in Mexico as at Silverstone, for instance.

Doesn't look familiar. It's also quite distinctive. Incredible to see the team bring upgrades so late in the season.

Not really, the wing will probably be a carry over for 25.

Looks very much like a wing designed to fit between Spa and Zandvoort spec, ie a true medium loaded wing. V shape seemingly takes a lot of inspiration from a competitor, though it features a lot of specific AoA twist spanwise - just like Spa wing.

Image

V shape is typically very efficient in terms of L/D ratio. Not sure it will be used in Brasil, seems too small, but it should be the wing for AD and most of the races in the first half of 2025.

And they call it a stall. A STALL!

That’s a nice looking wing, shame they probably won’t race it on Sunday as it’s forecast to hack it down with rain #-o
