No, there was a digital board that went on just as he passed.
Digital boards were switched on with delay, between them was a marshall that was waving a yellow flag. The penalty itself was to be given, but waiting to do it for so long was unprofessional to say the least.
Yes but with mitigating circumstances, applying the harshest penalty and to put it out of reach of appeal with a penalty not used in over 2 years?

The penalty is inconsistent with anything I've seen.
Well what do you expect from an organisation that wants to milk as much money as possible from this championship? Drivers title has been concluded, but they managed to keep the constructor title wide opened.

To me the most incredible thing is how they didnt manage to declare a VSC for that mirror and remove it. Why were they fine with such a substantial piece of bodywork to sit in the middle of the track where speeds get over 300kmh. Two punctures happened for this stupidity and luckily noone got hurt.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

Or a few million in damage if the punctures were more severe.

With all the changes recently, this does very much smell like meddling from MBS. Can't wait for this guy to leave the sport.

The fact that Verstappen can lift 10% for less than a second and avoid a penalty despite not actually slowing down goes to show how idiotic the rules are. If any of this actually was about safety that wouldn't be allowed.
Rules are idiotic, but what it showed is that 'awareness' is an important part of a racing driver's repertoire. Max was 2s ahead, saw the yellow (board, flags, LED, whatever) and in his mind, the 'rules' (however stupid they are) kicked in, and he lifted to avoid a penalty. Lando was blisfully unaware.

It's a terrible, monstrous penalty (10s + pitstop duration, for 'not lifting' ?) , but it still doesn't take it away from the fact that the driver opened the door and provided the opportunity for external stupidity to kill his race. Mega learning for him.

Silver lining : it's good that Lando is getting all these 'finer lessons' in 2024, should keep him well prepared and polished for 2025.

Honestly the team couldn't have asked for a better training year than this considering the goals coming in to the season.

Derek Warwick was the steward - cue the conspiracy theories. Will Joseph should have warned Norris. On the onboard you can see that Piastri was warned by his engineer and he lifted.

Verstappen seemed to have noticed the flag himself. Good job by him. Not a big fan of "whinging" on the radio but all of them seem to be doing it so whatever. Karma will catch them.

What I find the most frustrating is that the drivers are expected only to "lift" to satisfy the criteria. This seems like a stupid way to police this. This double waved was on a straight, with clear visibility of a green flag behind. When double yellow is waved you are supposed to be able to immediately stop. Was Verstappen that much closer to "immediately" stopping with a minor lift?

Btw seems like Verstappen did not stop 3 years ago for Gasly double waved yellows - https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comme ... ed_yellow/

I'm sure there were many other cases.

Mazepin got the same penalty in 2021 for the same thing iirc. I think those two incidents are enough precedent for this... it happens rarely because it is not typical of an F1 driver to miss this kind of thing

Fair enough, but i still don't think those flags were obvious enough and the green board shortly after distracting and misleading.

Dafnalina and this guy:

Reckon Max didn’t lift under a yellow flag earlier in the season and only got a 5 second penalty. Just wondering if any ones which race this happened in so I can check for myself.

That should've served as mitigation imo. Usually when it's not cut and dry you get some lesser punishment.

A yellow light comes on their steering wheel too.
Lando has just had a nightmare and fair play to him he’s taking it on the chin.

Double waved (and yellow) is warning you of a danger on track. If you can see that the track is clear and that there is a green flag right behind the yellow, is it really dangerous or more dangerous than doing a miniscule lift?

I do understand the rules but I think that the stewards should have taken this as mitigating circumstances and gave him slightly reduced penalty (maybe +10s). This is not blindly flying into a corner or going over a crest in the road where you have no visibility.

Also, is it normal to show double waved yellow for a piece of debris?

Doesn't seem like he had anything light up on his dash but maybe I am missing something.

Yeah, agree it was a penalty, but this was hardly a wilful infringement nor the most dangerous. I'm just miffed that the penalty applied took it beyond any appeal.
