I think you guys make more of the current situation than actually is happening in reality. ALO doesn’t seem to care too much about this year anymore, although it is also clear that he is for sure not happy that STR has more points (circumstances aside).

Now, starting the European season he jets Wednesday morning to the races and returns on Sunday evening in Monaco. He will do the stuff he has to do, buts that’s about it. Feels a bit like 2018, with the difference that next season could be his last chance, which keeps him alive in the head.

hmm looking at STR times, he is where he is usually
Maybe the team would’ve had more clarity if they let the second driver try the updates in FP2..
Is doesn't matter who drive it,the sensors, telemetry doesn't know who drive it. The driver feedback a different story, but they just want to know the difference between the 2 package not the race pace.

I dont see any improvement tbh, yeah stroll was half a second slower this year but this is a short circuit
Compare Stroll to Alonso usually, Alonso is 0.3-0.5s quicker than Stroll so I would say that upgrades work. How much they will give in quali? Hard to tell at this point. We have to wait at least for quali sims in Q2.
The problem that Aston can't find extra place between q1 and q3 . Sometimes thsn can't even run the q1 time in q2. The problem comes when you have to push on edge with the car....
It's cause they've been slow. They go as fast as they can just to get out of Q1, no pace in hand.

In the start of 2023 when Alonso was fighting for podiums he was a different person, now he just wants to get the season over with and hopes Newey and Honda comes up with a decent car for next year. Understandably so. He doesn't want to fight for 1 or 2 points...

I was hoping for a bigger jump than this in the floor but I guess I'm not surprised they went conservative. Maybe the LAST upgrade full NWT it will be.

Yeah, in the races he asks ..."how many laps left?" like he can't wait to get out of the car.

We'll find out tomorrow what the upgrades can do. Guess they'll crunch the numbers tonight and have atleast one new setup for tomorrow.

Looking at the pics I would guess that they fit the new parts on ALO‘s car too now (at least other parts)…

Lance Stroll, given the responsibility to test Aston Martin's major upgrades, which included a new floor, was down in 17th.

Team-mate Fernando Alonso, in the previous-specification car for a back-to-back comparison, was three places higher and 0.121secs quicker.

Stroll said the car felt "the same". And although it features a new floor and engine cover, the Canadian described the upgrade as "small changes".

If lance is a tenth behind Alonso in the new car, i expect alonso to gain a few tenths tomorrow. But it will be difficult with only one practice session.

So, too, at Aston Martin where Fernando Alonso is almost willing the car into the corner, but rarely with the rear end grip to make that work, while Lance Stroll, driving the upgraded version, has his usual dash of comfort understeer but without it ever becoming so front limited that getting on the power is delayed too much.

this. from our standpoint outside of the car, we have the luxury of sitting around picking apart every little thing, and coming up with theories. people need to put themselves in alonsos shoes for a minute. 43 years old and another 24 race season with nothing to do but hope for a possible point or 2 if your lucky. if nothing changes lance has more points now than they will probably score for the rest of the season. hes just going through the motions now. and probably uses the fact that lance has more points to motivate himself on sundays

i kinda wonder if lance has the racing IQ to give a more detailed answer than that. he seems like the kind of guy that can drive the car fast, but if he had to tell you what he did he would struggle. i could be wrong, but ive never heard him say anything more than 3/4 of a sentence at one time.

Also coming in absolute rear race after race is embarrassing for the drivers. Its more digestible to be beaten by top teams but to be overtaken by teams with much less resources, who were way behind you has got be infuriating and demoralizing. It puts doubts about the competence of the rest of the team even if Newey is Newey.
