We've definitely sucked big time in Mexico for several years now. Starting 14th isn't surprising. Alonso can easily make up 4 positions on the start but you need luck or pace to hold it, who knows how tomorrow will play out.

im sure they wouldnt scrub the tires if it didnt help somehow haha. or at least, the benefits outweigh the cost. i think letting them cure and then cool down makes their performance less variable over a stint on the aston. maybe it gives them a bigger window in the pit strategies. not sure how it helps in quali, but they will probably be using at least some of the quali tires in the race.

Agreed, they must find some benefit in doing it. There is an activation chemical on the surface of those tires that makes them shiny. So they're just wiping that off.

But that's an assumption right? No different to me saying they appeared to use the same set of tires through all of Quali. It's hard to tell the difference. You're making that assumption based what is "typically" done. Maybe they saw another strategy of using multiple sets of new softs in the race. The F1 strategy guide says "The two stop soft>medium>soft race is no slower than the one-stop options, but practicalities tend to rule it out. It requires a driver to pass quickly and often, and this really isn’t the circuit that encourages that."

I went back and replayed FP2. The set of softs Alonso used in FP2 wasn't a scrub set. Meaning he scrubbed 2 sets and then used a 3ird not scrubbed set of softs for FP2.

So you get 13 sets, you have to return 1 set if you make it into Q3.

They have to return 2 sets of tires after each FP leaving them with 7 sets (6 if you get in Q3).

They Scrubbed:
5 sets of softs
1 set of Mediums
1 set of Hard.

I think they have at least 1 set of softs that have only a scrubbing lap on them.

My Assumption Comment was based on what they used in Quali not what they used or scrubbed in FP2.

BTW live timing would look like that even if they just used the same set of soft the whole time. Every time you stop oin the pits, it think you put a new set of tires on. The bar codes on the tires are no being scanned by living timing.
