Mclaren MCL40

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

You really have to look at the short video released to understand the car. The static picture released do not do it justice

The side pods are amazing. The undercut is massive and the way the top is so thin and tappers right in at the back is unreal. I’m sure the real car will show more development in places,

Obviously the barge boards and floor edges are hiding detail, and I doubt McLaren missed the the blown diffuser trick, even if they have, if they feel it’s of benefit it will be an easy addition as the airflow is already directed in that place.

The FW end plates look designed to work with edges of the front wing to pull the air out

The MCL39 still looked under-developed compared to other cars IMO, But that demonstrates clearly that it’s not the individual parts that make a car fast, it’s how they work as one that is important

I second that. While the sidepods are standard width and appear wider compared to the Red Bull, the undercut at the bottom is very deep and wide, which is impressive. It'll be interesting to see if things are different on the real car. All that's left is to wait to see what's really going on.

How about the wheel rim supplier of McLaren F1 2026? Will they return to Enkei?

They haven't been on track yet, at least according to SoyMotor.

Same here and then we'll see a blurry car very similar to the render.

Sidepods look like the renders? Floor looks like the renders too? Very basic barge area. No obvious diffuser hole.

It seems like it's exactly like the renders actually. Nothing really worth commenting that hasn't already been said. Very underwhelming looking car.

Let’s see when we have some better pictures other than that one ultra blurry one 🤣 looks like a lot of rake

Even the bargeboard thingy looks the same as those in the renders.

Until we know anything about performance how on earth can we comment on the effectiveness of the detail?
Not really McLaren specifically, but generally.

Commenting on the details is generally what happens here though, we never imply performance with it.

However, it should be noted that Mercedes, Ferrari and RedBull found interesting ways to interpret the regulation and they all have interesting features to look at. If it is indeed 1:1 with the renders (which so far it looks like it is), then except for being tightly-packaged, there's no interesting features in this car like the other 3.
