Red Bull RB22

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So where Audi have gone for a full floor extension, Red Bull have just opted to create a mini venture entrance like the last set of regs had.

Surprised by the direction change of the floors in that area, it’s quite aggressive.

My question is how far back could you go with this "tunnel inlet"? Aren't there regs on the roof height under the floor? Otherwise it wouldn't be a flat floor. I don't see how it could be much of a tunnel.

If we look at Audi's floor LE, what can you really do here?

Small details. It looks like Red Bull moved the front tire temperature sensors to the SIS.

I think it’s more about having surfaces that force more air under the floor or the car, which seems counter-intuitive as you want low pressure under there, but I assume it’s accelerating air through the diffuser and making it more efficient.

I think it’s more of an outwash device than it’s a tunnel. An vortex generator to seal the floor edge…

The low outboard ceilings of their diffuser looks to be due to a dipped, wing-like or venturi-like section i.e. their diffuser is not constantly expanding--it expands, contracts, then re-expands. The fence acts as a divider between the central section and these outer sections. Approximation:

It looks more like a mini barge board
In the last regulation set, in this zone, we saw clean end-to-end curved underfloor strakes to create outwashing vortices from lateral floor edge. Will this 'mini-bargeboard' be anywhere near as successful in 'sending air' to combat front wheel wake ? Or are they trying to send vortices in the x-direction under the floor ?
The inner most one creates a 'spurious venturi inlet' , but I am not competent enough to judge what advantage this will have, over a 'regular' floor-leading-edge with 'vannila' straight-er pointing daggers (like the ones on the audi). Kindly elaborate if possible.

To me it looks like the air going behind it will increase the pressure on daggers and drive stronger vortices (+1 extra vortex from the “bargeboard” edge)

A nice 'sunny' high-res pic showing the finer-details on the RB22 :

Image

- we can clearly see from this pic - the 'shoulder-pipe' (ROKT) is getting air from the main sidepod inlet itself, probably cooling some small form factor heatexchanger (some electronics?) OR perhaps just 'stealing some air from the sidepod and sending elsewhere to the mid-secton.

- @vorticism, didn't understand your previous post explaining that the diffuser isn't monotonically expanding, that it does some shrinking before finally expanding, evidenced by the mouse-hole pic in your post. I was unable to 'see' the evidence, does this pic show the same evidence in any way ?

what is that 'white/bright' stub visible where the rear axle would be ? something on the fence through which the high speed camera is aiming ?

Pierre Waché on the 2026 challenge:
“The overall concept of the car isn’t locked. We won’t be able to change everything, but we can modify a lot. That’s the key: it’s not about having a good car now, but being able to improve it.”
