there are reports that stroll is wanting honda to pay part of alonsos salary for 27 and 28 at 40 million. i imagine part of his delay in signing is the fact that he knows that they have no other serious options and he intends to capitalize money wise if hes gonna be stuck in the midfield again.

i still dont think that hes ready to leave with newey in the team. he could go, but hed still like to leave on top and its still a possibility. and hes got big money coming if he sticks around under the circumstances.
Honda paying for part of Alonso's salary does not make sense because Aston Martin's agreement with Honda is to pay for the engines.
doesnt seem like that would necessarily stop them from doing it. seems like there was talk in the mclaren days of them paying part of his salary. im not sure if they actually ended up doing it back then. i dont necassarily think honda would have to be forced into it. they seem to want him to stay too right now. but im sure stroll will be pushing the idea that top drivers havent really been beating down the door since the start of the season like they couldve been under different circumstances.

i know that they at least gave him an acura/ honda nsx. whether that counts or not is up for discussion lol

IF it is true, they would likely have something in the contract between Honda and AMR F1 that would allow for this.

There are Performance clauses in the contract between Aston and Honda in their initial signing.
- Everyone knows they had a 2 year deal, if engine were bad 2 years to fix or else they lose support.
- Honda cover the entirety of engine development cost
- Engine cost of supplied engine entirely free (but can use it as budget cap)
- Depending upon how good engine performs Honda to influence second driver seat (Stroll replaced by Tsunoda)
- Obviously the disastrous start mean Lawrence now trying to get Honda to foot the bill for Alonso
- Honda is holding out until it sees just how much they can improve with the Engines within the next 4 races.
All that makes perfect sense to me. So in IMHO, it could be true.

Allowing Honda to replace Stroll with Tsunoda if the engine is good sounds like fairytales from Tsunoda stans.

Wild speculation in my book. Tsunoda finished with less points than Stroll last year, and Tsunoda drove the Red Bull.

I believe the influence the driver bit, not the choices.

yeah that could be somewhere in the section discussing honda having input on future drivers. who knows. regardless, at least they wont be paying hamilton/leclerc $$$ salaries. they have big sponsors so they can find it somewhere.

Just ran into a Race video that touched on Alonso getting screwed by trying such games with Ferrari and ending up being replaced with Vettel. (Also toxic PR).
I would be surprised if Honda paying for Alonso was ever seriously considered with their history.

Honda paying for part of Alonso's salary does not make sense because Aston Martin's agreement with Honda is to pay for the engines.
In the McLaren days, they gave the PU for free and gave McLaren $100M
McLaren had like 9 drivers and 8 constructor championships to its name Aston Martin (including predecessors) has 0.
The latest drivers' title was only 2-3 years before the negotiations occurred.

Yes but they didn’t have a PU did they? They couldn't stay with Merc, unless they gave up their car business. So basically Honda had them over a barrel. Plus at that time the Honda name in F1 was golden, it hadn't been tarnished by the poor starts of 2015 and 2026.

I don't know anything about the car business. AFAIK Ron Dennis wanted to be a factory team. And apparently Honda eagerly wanted to return.

if aston thought alonso wasnt going to re-sign theyd be scrambling to get somebody by now. newey just keeps saying "im pretty sure we can get him to stay" like hes delaying, but has very little doubt. i imagine that hes already given them some assurance that he plans on staying and theyre just waiting to announce any details. probably until the Spain race in a couple of weeks.

They do not have to scramble at all. Tsunoda is pretty much on call for them, not to mention they got the likes of Jak Crawford allowing Stroll to lead the team and honestly Sergio Perez will switch if he is called. However it's very obvious Alonso will stay

I hate being a contrarian, but I remember how subdued Alonso was after the failed upgrades at the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. From that point, it looked like he was just through the motions and by summer break, he announced his retirement. I get the same vibes from him today.

This is why Monza is very important. If AMR can finish on the point in Monza it proves the Engine is now working cause both Hungary and Dutch GP showed the AMR is much faster int eh corners compared to the midfield. Now Honda was said to field only 10hp but comments suggested that this 10hp was negated by drivability issues. For Monza they need to ensure they have at the very least 20hp with 50-60% of the drivability issues sorted.
