Leo Turrini reports that Thierry Baritaud (30+ years at Ferrari), head of hybrid systems and turbocharger at the Scuderia, is leaving Maranello.
I read about this too.
If you are leaving just before your latest specification engine is being introduced... I wonder what that can mean.
Sadly probably because the numbers are not what they wanted/expected :(

It seems like hes just reached retirement aged and decided to retire. apparently its been planned. But its also Nugnes reporting it so take it with a grain of salt i guess

28 points between Lewis and Charles, long way to go still, it’s too early to start prioritising drivers. Except for that 3 race stretch where Charles had two DNFs their performance has been pretty much identical.

Besides, I don’t feel that Ferrari is truly in the battle for the driver’s championship at this stage. Merc and Ant are too consistent and have a solid gap.
With the highest of respect, it's this sort of attitude that will be exactly why Ferrari won't win the WDC.

They have next to no hope this year, but any small hope they do have is getting behind the driver with the most points right now (ideally 5 races ago) and maximising every single strategy and finish.

Brutal, win at all costs attitude is needed in the team.

what a bunch of cr*p

Maybe we should just agree straight away that Ferrari will tell its drivers: whoever wins in Australia will be the number one driver

To those Hamilton fans demanding he be given priority
Last year at this point, Piastri was 34 points ahead of Lando Norris (Hamilton is now 28 ahead of Leclerc)
How many of you thought for one second Mclaren should force Lando to take second place from then on?

Ill answer for you. None of you thought that...

LET THEM RACE.

They are too close in terms of points, their performance is too similar, and the chance of winning is next to none (as you admit yourself). This would be a terrible time to impose team orders. High cost on the team's cohesion and their public image for almost no gain.

And tbh, I think most of the people advocating for this do it for partisan reasons. If Lewis was 30 points behind because of two mechanical DNFs and then was ordered to stop competing vs his teammate at half season his fans would absolutely lose their ****. Letting them compete on the same terms is the only option at this stage.

Woocasz - I'm lost for word at you.

Badger - Hamilton has almost 20% more points. That is significant and time is already running out, even a full push for the points leading driver now is arguably too late. If it was much closer to the championship leader then fair enough I think your view on this would be reasonable. But its nowhere near close and only maximum aggression (in terms of maximising the lead driver) will create any hope.

As a Hamilton fan, I say that this season the best thing that the team can do is to support the faster driver at a given event in order to maximise the team result. They might end up with more podium results and even, hopefully, another win or two.

For the team, letting them race i.e. letting them hold up each other and thus allowing others to benefit, does the team no favours.

If Charles is faster and has the better chance of a podium, let him go through. Likewise, if Lewis is faster and the better bet for the podium, let him through.

The drivers should be playing the team game at this stage as neither has a reasonable chance of chasing the title win.

Well that's kind of what I said, let them compete on the same terms. That could mean zero team orders, or it could be something like papaya rules, as long as it's the same for both.

Antonelli’s fifth power unit will not include the ADUO upgrades. Mercedes has approval to introduce an upgraded PU, but it won’t make its debut until the American leg of the season in October, either in Austin or Mexico City. That means both Antonelli and Russell will end up using six power units across the full championship.
Double grid drops for the Mercedes drivers, and people say Hamilton doesn't have a chance...

If the points were the other way around, this thread would look different...

I feel like the notion that Ferrari has no chance at the WDC so they should just give up and focus on the WCC is such a defeatist attitude to have. Lando is miles back and still talking about his chances at it. Lewis in 2016 missed it by 5 points after almost closing a 43 point deficit to Nico, Charles had a what? 50 something point lead on Max in 2022 and everyone including Max thought it was over, Max had a 104-point deficit to the WDC and at the end of last year, he finished 2 points behind almost winning it (obvious caveats of each season like ferrari's reliability in 2022 then the td etc) but you just never know what could happen in F1. The car has been competitive throughout the season despite the big engine deficit to Merc with both Charles and Lewis barely losing out on pole positions because they just dont have enough energy at the end of the lap, ADUO could very well change that at more "normal" tracks that arent Monza, help with tire wear etc.

The way you win in Formula 1 is by building the fastest car on the grid, not by imposing some obscure team orders that make little sense while driving a slower car.

Lots of Hamilton’s fans are conditioned to expect handouts because of how things were at Mercedes for years, not happening here, winning will have to be done on merit. No gifts.

I don’t think they should give up on the WDC by any means but there isn’t one clear contender that means going all in on that person is likely to yield success.

For me, backing one driver is less about points (unless and until these very clearly favour one over the other) and more about the collective dataset making it incredibly clear which one is most likely to consistently score the most points: for example, I think Ferrari should have got Massa out of Alonso’s way at Australia 2013 - the first race of the season. By this point it was patently obvious that Alonso would beat Massa across the season and the delay in getting him past actually cost Alonso the win by removing his opportunity to use his pace to make up for more stops.

Same goes for Michael in Austria 2002 to some (albeit a lesser since the championship wasn’t close) extent. It’s not about the stage of the season it’s about what we all know to be true.

In the case of Charles and Lewis, it’s completely unclear to me which is more capable of going on a run if the car enables it. Therefore I’d want to keep them both as motivated as possible since this will ultimately mean more likelihood of the team taking race wins and therefore WCC, which still seems the more realistic shot.

There is a certain irony in a Ferrari fan lecturing Mercedes fans about team orders.......lol

FWIW, I do not think Ferrari should impose team orders. However I do think that they should agree what will happen when the two drivers are on different strategies. Both drivers should agree that they won't hold the other one up. The team comes first after all.
