He was a cold, matter-of-fact interviewee for many years - to the point of boring military precision. Mechanical, soulless and, well,... hardly endearing to most.
It seems to be a common trait when many German people speak English - which is why it's a pretty universally known stereotype for super-seriousness (why when people want to sound like a wanker or imply Nazis/racism etc do they often pretend to with a stereotypical strong German accent? - because it is referential and also an apt yet light-hearted cue of true meaning). This comes across as a sign of arrogance and is partly synonymous in most English speaking cultures. It usually
isn't actually arrogance, but is easily mistaken for it and Schumy seldom did himself favours in the
lightening up area until many years into his career.
Simply, people tend to like people who, amongst serious business, are still people they can relate to. Delivery is a massive part of this.
