That's a harsh response. :)
Are people really disgusted that much by what he says?
The sport needs this attitude. :P
No. It doesn't. At all. Doesn't even make sense.

Professional drivers, representing professional organizations and top-dollar sponsors, have no need to be a prick.

Not surprised at this to be honest. Pre-season fighting talk!

What're the chances Lewis had a whiskey or two when he was talking? It was an interview for Johnny Walker after-all.

Most importantly: Does Lewis even like a dram?
Epic-Fail, yes perfectly said =D>

How is he a prick, are you basing this on the words "blown away"? What about the other 95% of the interview?
And why does Johnie Walker, a top dollar sponsor, promote and encourage the prick side of Hamilton? They were probably the ones who milked that comment out of him.

If he is a prick, and it motivates him, then so be it. I have no problem with that, he has earned the right to say what he wants. Any other driver is free to dispute his claims by beating him if they can. 8)

I will accept that he blew alonso away on the basis of his debut season performance alone; Alonso was not destroyed by any means though.
On the other hand the points score also does not say much about the events that took place in the races over the season, so i didn't restrict the definition of "blown away" to a points tally, i looked at the memorable moments over the season.

Hamilton is also not delusional or psychotic, there must be some reasoning for his comments. He was the one working with Alonso, so they know each other better than any of us know them. He can look Alonso eye to eye and know within him self he had Alosno's ticket. What's more Hamilton could also have team data presented to him by his engineer in conclusion of his ideas. We may never know the background to his choice of words, this is why i wont be quick to judge him as a prick.

I listened to the whole 20 minutes of the interview, and i learned more about his perseverance and a little about his past. It also increased my anticipation for the new season.
The blown away statement put a smirk on my face more than anything.

I believe there is a cultural difference in the response to that quote.
For example, the word 'fanny' it has an entirely different meaning if you have a USA English heritage compared to a British English heritage.
What LH said there is just factual and objective to me coming from a British English perspective.

Indeed the phrase "blew away" can just simply mean "impressed".

Indeed, you don't wanna know what "tok" means in Swedish, do you?

However the xpression "idiot", like in the case of Lewis Hamilton, is pretty universal, isn't it?

Not in this context, I'm afraid:

"My first season in Formula 1, alongside a World Champion - a double World Champion - and I blew him away. I beat him."

That looks like an emphatic device where the italic part is just paraphrase of the bold one. Not that I would ever allege Hamilton of knowingly using rhetoric

Interesting british-english perspective you have there.

From my british-english perspective, it is considered highly unsporting to say you blew anyone away, let alone your teammate. Hamilton sounds like a fairly major prick.

Is it me, or is there something of a lack of being nice amongst the top drivers? Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Schumi- at times they have all said completely unsporting things and acted like total jerks.

I fear the days of gentlemen drivers is over, and has been since the Senna days.

But at least when it is around the track, it can be looked at through the pumped up adrenaline after a race.

I have to agree in an off season interview that is a bit crass.

This is regular psychological pre-war "maneuvers". It also shows that Lewis finds Alonso a thread in Ferrari. You could see that Lewis rarely said anything like this during Alonso's second stint at Renault.

How?? Dude. In the interview all he's saying is "Oh look at me, I'm sooo good.. I came in and crushed Alonso's performance in my rookie year! No one's ever been so good! No one's ever come in in their first year and beat a double world champion on the track, beat their experience, beat their mental toughness."

At a minimum, Lewis comes across as conceited. At the same time he's pretty much putting down Alonso's talent level.

And who is to say Johnnie Walker is encouraging that? That's a stretch.

And every word of it is true... it just eats you up inside doesnt it

Reminds me of Ali when he beat Sonny Liston, "I shook up the world" "I must be the greatest of all time" all at the age of 22... and he proved every word of it to be true.

That's completely unnecessary, but not at all surprising from you.

Moreover, I'm blacker than Lewis Hamilton, and my skin is nearly translucent.

Some people just don't like the bloke, myself included, because he rubs those folks the wrong way with comments exactly like the ones that started this thread. It has nothing to do with his ethnicity.
