Mercedes GP MGP W01

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Mercedes won't be running their new diffuser until Bahrain:

Doesn't sound too good, not being able to test it properly beforehand.

So they WILL have a new diffuser. I wonder how much will it evolve from current one.

Expect the McLaren design as the benchmark this year in terms of diffusor size.
Paddock talk wrote:F1: Mercedes Set To Land Another Major Sponsor ?

Mercedes GP will reportedly unveil another major sponsor prior to the Bahrain season opener.

The German sport business publication 'Sponsors' said the funding was secured off the back of the involvement of returning seven time world champion Michael Schumacher.

The magazine said the sponsor is a German multinational that is new to formula one.

The Malaysian oil company Petronas is the newly branded Mercedes GP's title sponsor.
Merc will need all the money they can make off the Schumacher connection to come even close to Ferrari's ritches. They are probably short by 200 mil $ by now.

Don't think that anyone said they wouldn't have a new diffuser - some (like me) were merely stating that it wouldn't be that radically different to the current one. So don't expect to suddenly see a quad deck super diffuser that connects directly to the rear wing, merely an evolution of the one they are currently running.

I know that Formula One is not Star Wars ;) I'm just curious, if it will be bigger or much bigger - something like McLaren's or Renault's. By now I was almost sure, they will have only minor update for the diffuser shape until Bahrain.

Excuse me guys, doesn't Mercedes have the shortest car this year? because when you look at McLaren MP4-25 it's so much longer than MGPW01 and I believe that Lotus and Williams cars would be almost the same size as Mercedes' car is.doesn't it make it more difficult for them to get the adequate weight disturbution?

not quite .
If all cars carry the same amount of ballast ,a shorter wheelbase would only have the effect that for a given distance you are moving ballast you would have a bigger
change in weight distribution.
Also the shorter car should have ,given equal technologies applied, less mass than a longer one,so more potential for ballast in the shorty.
If you think about moving non ballast parts around in the car ,you are absolutely right .Increasing length of the car should create new voids in the car where you could reposition parts to.
In terms of ballast ,the problem maybe that you would need to find denser material than tungsten ..which is platinum ,gold, iridium or osmium ...

Really, the upper deck opening is not that large and the area bounded by the lower wing and end plates is not sealed so not part of the diffusor in the strictest sense.

again, really, how do you come by that number cos I believe the Mercedes budget for 2010 through 2011 to be healthy. What new sponsors bring to the table is what Mercedes removes from their own books.
Petronas brings a healthy sum of money to the team as well. So not sure where you "short $200million...."

I can't see the diffuser :? I think probably it's the same one so they have a baseline laptime and see how much the new one improves?
