2011 F1 car concepts

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

i don't exactly know how the movable rear wing works, but I'm guessing the shark fin won't be able to connect to the rear wing because it will move?

Shark fins will not be allowed to connect with the rear wing as per 2011 regs.
Slots in the rear wing and the beam wing will also be banned for 2011.

Passive devices are not allowed in spirit of the rules. Although I have seen nothing in the rules to suggest a pod mounted(like Sauber had) passive Fduct would be deemed illegal.
So long as the driver is not involved in its operation, or an electronic/mechanical switch is activating the Fduct, then the duct should technically be legal if it doesnt fall in the plane area the FIA specified.

I don't think so... the fin could probably still connect, and could kind of "slice through" the wing when the movable wing was activated.

I believe shark fins to be banned mate...as in no connection whatsoever.

There is now an exclusion zone in the regulations that prevent the shark fin from going near the rear wing.
3.9.1 No bodywork situated between 50mm and 330mm forward of the rear wheel centre line may be more than 730mm above the reference plane.

has anyone got any images of how the rear wing will work? or images of there understanding?

I've got ideas in my head, but just not sure if that's what it will be

Will the vertical plane move to become horizontal? i.e flat like monza spec (but even flatter)

Are the regulations open enough to allow different teams to come up with different interpretations of it? or is the design pretty fixed?

The RW flap will pivot upward (more horizontal) near its trailing edge to increase the slot gap distance, making the wing less effective and creating less downforce and drag for passing. Fortunately, I hear that Toyota will not be supplying the actuator.

For saftey reasons yes. To clarify, if the mechanism fails, due to the pivot being at the top part of the upper wing, the force from the passing air will push the wing back to it's default position.

On the other hand If the wing were pivoted from the leading edge, it would rotate down it's trailing edge to flatten itself going into "low drag mode" instead. So If the mechanism failed, you would have the wing going to an even more low drag position, which is dangerous.

You can say a high drag wing pivoted at the trailing edge is a self returning mechanism. And a high drag wing pivoted at the leading edge is a non returning mechanism.

Yes it has. This is from the F1Tech Article on the homepage:

No more shaped wheel spokes
After the static front wheel fairings that abounded in 2009, were banned and the wheel design homologated, there must have been some surprise that Ferrari managed to create an aerodynamic wheel shape in 2010. This is partly limited now by the restriction on surface area for spokes and shaping. The limited only allows 13% of the wheel centre to be spoked, meaning that a ten spoke wheel has to have spokes just 16mm wide.
“12.4.6 When viewed perpendicular to the plane formed by the outer face of the wheel and between the diameters of 120mm and 270mm the wheel may have an area of no greater than 24,000mm2.”

And we move yet closer to spec cars. How long before we see a "claimer car" rule? How about a standardized body a la NASCAR?

Well they banned aero devices around the wheel. So they should try and keep the rule. But no high noses is a bit pointless IMO.

eventually the cars will look like gp2 cars ...exactley the same if they keep banning every innovation, I'm sure if you put every innovation which has been banned or outlawed onto a car it would be about 20seconds faster a lap than the current cars.

as for the moveable rear wing, I think it will increase overtaking but not by a massive amount.

I'm all for low noses. Drivers need to have a more upright position to be able to watch what happens at the front of the car. High noses with the nose point above 120 mm will be banned from 2013 to keep the CoG of front wheel KERS down. This could potentially already happen in 2012.

Wow that is great, why not make it a spec series afterall? every car is just going to look the same.
