Virgin MVR-02 Cosworth

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's a bit unsurprising that Wirth seems to have taken a few visual cues from the RB7. The upper, black cascade element is similar to the RB7's, although most of the grid have it as well, although the design of the endfences is still relatively simple, especially compared to teams like Renault, which are putting a lot of effort into that area.

It's a welcome sign that Wirth and his team are beginning to put out more adventurous designs, but after the practice sessions, I have to say, I really don't know where Virgin is going. Their just stagnating, with Lotus pulling away and HRT catching up.

At least the car is a bit less ugly with the new nose...

I found the launch nose looked really cool from the front. Terrible from all the other angles though lol.

It looks much better with that new high nose, but it doesn't look any faster...

Atleast it's nice to see that they are trying. I think Wirth has put quite a lot of effort to this and as they get more laps their pace will improve. And the car looks much better :D

Glock gave frustrated feedback to RTL about the car development and he finaly seems to have given up on Virgin, stating the team seems to start at square one every race weekend and all the main upgrades did not work ....oops.

Glock is crying because he's getting handled by a pay-driver rookie in a car with less "upgrades". I don't think Glock belongs in F1, although if Virgin doesn't improve neither will they.

You have to be joking. Glock is like a Rosberg or Button. He has destroyed Trulli countless times on race pace. Glock is not a weak driver.

The car is crap and so are the upgrages.

What is your definition of a Low nose, how low is low for you? how much cm above the ground?

Here is some insight: Look at the wheel center and the which way the air in front of the noses is being diverted. Look at the ramp at the tip of the noses too. The TOP surface OF THE CHASSIS of the '25 and '26 is lower than the '24, but believe it or not the bottom surface of '24 nose cone is lower.]
My definition would be "lower than the mean nose height for the year", or if you want to really push it, "lower than the mean nose height minus the standard deviation". I'm certain the McLaren qualifies under the first, I'd be fairly confident under the second... though the HRT may push them out from below the standard dev.

That is, when people say "that has a low nose", they don't mean to describe some destinction that the design team were thinking about – i.e. "hmm, shall we go with a high nose concept or a low nose one" that makes the car behave totally differently. Instead, they're simply pointing out "hey, that car has a lower nose than the others".
Nope, Low nose means you are diverting a large portion of air upwards, Using the wedge shape of the nose to directly make downforce.

In a high nose setup you sacrifice down-force from the nose itself to get better airflow around the barge boards and front splitter.

Some teams are unsure of this compromise so they keep that near horizontal nose underline and a steep upper nose, others like Mercedez last year had an ugly undulation of an under-nose that they decisively changed for 2011 to a more sensible high nose.

It is a clear physical difference to me, not a statistical game as you are making it out to be. I think it makes a good topic on its own.

Glock seems quite dispirited, and rightly so. But he does himself no favours by being outqualified by d'Ambrosio, a rookie and a pay driver. To be honest i've been relatively impressed by Jerome. He's been much better than di Grassi, despite having a poor record in GP2.

Next weekend Virgin will go to Spain for an aerotest. That might prove very important in getting the new updates sorted out. Hopefully they find the reason for the poor pace and are faster in Barcelona.

Glock was outqualified by D'Ambrosio for one reason only. The "updates" that were fitted to his car, were useless and actually slowed the car. This has been acknowledged by HRT. These "updates" will not be seen again.

Unfortunately, HRT stated that Glocks car was the one fitted with the "updates" whilst D'Ambrosio did not have these.

They removed the new exhaust and floor from Glock's car after FP2, as they had some problems with overheating. After that the two cars were supposed to be the same spec.

D'Ambrosio was quicker in China aswell. As I think that Glock is looking to move to some other team, he really needs to up his game or he will soon have nowhere else to go than stay at Virgin. And don't get me from, i'm sort of a Glock fan, but he has not impressed lately.

On Quali pace Trulli destroyed Glock, on the 15 times they qualified the TF109s, Glock only out paced Trulli 3 times.

As for race pace, Glock is better, but not by much over Trulli.

Glock is a quality driver, but if there was a seat in a better team that he would be avalable it would probably be at Williams at the end of the season i feel, as Rubens i think will call it quits then. And i think that Adrian Sutil will take that seat then, whitch leaves another question. Who is faster now, Sutil or Glock.

Does Glock deserve to be in F1, yes, but for how long??? In my opinion, 2012 may be his last, but i feel that it will be at Virgin.
