Most innovation is slow boring relentless progress. Famous innovators put in hours of methodical rigour to get things to work. Williams say they took 2 years to sort out their innovative gearbox, McLaren spent 18 months developing their F-duct.
I know what you mean about clients running scared. However, innovation can also be about reducing risk.
For example, the London 2012 Olympic stadium is finished over a year ahead of schedule, under budget, and is the first Olympic stadium to be built without a fatality. That took some innovation.
