Use your numeracy skills and lateral thinking to work in finance.

Try telling that to F1 engineers, or Calatrava.

... or are you are thinking of the distorted UK use of the word that equates "engineer" with "repair technician" ?

No, I'm thinking of the 99.999% percent of the profession who are neither F1 engineers nor Calatrava. Lateral thinking might be prized in theory by the profession (an in practice in some areas), but I don't think that it's something that the profession is particularly known for. Not only is 'tried and true' the mantra for the vast majority, the profession itself rarely attracts creative sorts or risk takers.

Engineering is not about innovation. It's all slow, boring, relentless progress.
It just seems like innovation to outsiders, becuase we engineers are tricksy!

In almost every real industry out there, clients don't want innovation, they want track record. Mention the word 'new' and clients --- themselves and run a mile.

Most innovation is slow boring relentless progress. Famous innovators put in hours of methodical rigour to get things to work. Williams say they took 2 years to sort out their innovative gearbox, McLaren spent 18 months developing their F-duct.

I know what you mean about clients running scared. However, innovation can also be about reducing risk.

For example, the London 2012 Olympic stadium is finished over a year ahead of schedule, under budget, and is the first Olympic stadium to be built without a fatality. That took some innovation.

I made a lot of money on the stock market (before the crash & I survived that quite well). It was my numeracy & analytical abilities coming from an engineering background that was the basis for my analysis of the shares (fundamental analysis, not technical = graphical horoscopes).

Reverse engineer Adrian Neweys DNA from a hair sample (very rare) or skin sample to create a new drink product called REDSKULL! Which once consumed enables your mind to think like a CFD supercomputer.

Mathematics? how would one apply engineering to financing itself? And what would separate the engineer from the mathematician and the actual people with finance degrees?
