I'm a little surprised that heating the edges is enough to defog the entire windscreen. I don't suppose the bus lines could be connected by a transparent conductive film of some sort, rather than discrete resistance lines (for lack of a better word, the rear window defrosters as you mentioned). The whole film could heat up, without visual distraction of lines.

You're right about helmet visors:

you don´t heat just the edges, the "bus rails" are just distributing 12V across the window "+" on one side and "-" on the other, and then small resistance wires run inbetween them.
Right, but the wires are still around the edges only, right? Not densely packed like on a rear window, so as to not be visually obstructive. Non-issue, though, if the entire sheet ends up getting heated up eventually.

Sounds like the aircraft windscreens, in your link, are maybe what the lmp cars would use these days. Vacuum metalized conductive layer on acrylic/PC. Would make sense, if conducting enough heat from perimeter heater wires across a large sheet of plastic is not effective.

the heated wind screen we use in aircraft the wires are pretty much invisible unless you are looking for them they are incredibly fine.

Gotcha, wasn't aware of the this. Thanks for clarifying.

Definitely... I've experiened them on a Mondeo. The only time you notice them is when its foggy out... a combination of white background and the fact you're focussing much closer to the screen....

Nice description 747, I didn't know the wires were so fine. This is all applicable to the recent F1 canopies discussion!
