Why (and how to) downshift without previosly hitting the brakes if engine is in high rpm? That only makes sense if car is already in mid-low rpm and at speed not matching gear.
Watch the F1 cars through... campsa is it? this weekend to see what I mean.

If they don't brake they'll grab a lower gear on initial turn in.

That applies if he is at lower revs. If you downshift at (let's say) 5th gear 19.000 to 4th, the revs will at least increase by another 3.000 (I'm guessing) now you guess what happens to the engine next :D

I often use that tecnique too. It's very usefull when you don't need the left foot on the clutch :)
The trouble with the rat-race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.

In a shifter kart I don't downshift before braking. Just brake hard then come down to the right gear. On a hairpin turn I will brake deeply into it and then downshift maybe as late as possible.

I'm finally getting used to driving upslope now, tho I stall the thing at least once a day =(

Downshifting is ONLY done after revs drop to suit the selected lower gear otherwise the sequential gearbox won't conduct the downshift. That is why they are so useful - they don't allow driver to damage engine by downshifting before revs drop to pre-programmed max rpm for that gear.

Downshifting with high revs means destruction of engine regardless what kind of vehicle are we talking about. If downshifted at high rpm engine would get several thousand rpms more via transmission and that would lead to blow with no exception.

 Damn it!

They didn't do the downshifting that they used to.

It was easier to see in the left prior to campsa, but that was the late shift pre apex to get the nose in after alot of the braking was done.
