Monza testing-June

Post

Most of the Teams are training at Monza for the Canadian round. Apparently, there was also some testing planned at Paul Ricard, but it seem it was cancelled. Is Monza a better circuit to prepare for Gilles Villeneuve and Indiannapolis, because of the very long straight?

There is a bit of confusion with the unofficial timming, with f1racing.net website ranking Kubika first with a time of 1'22"878, and other sites (including here) put him fifth with 1'24"330. Is it a pure error from f1racing source, or does it mean Robert made that lap, but it wasn't registered because of some reasons? And there is more, here on f1technical Heidfeld is on top with 1'23.647, and on f1. com it's fisichella's time, and heidfeld is second ](*,) . It's really confusing. Of course, I assume f1technical is right, and others are wrong  , but I'd like to have a confirmation of the times from yesterday...

A few pics I took this morning

Fisichella with low downforce front wing, rear wing and BAR style blades on sidepods :

For a few laps on the other Renault there were the longer chord “ears” already tested in Barcelona couple of weeks ago, it seems they are separated in two parts, one on the nosecone the other one on the chassis. As usual Kovalainen was testing with the slim nosecone and “normal” wings.
[IMG:152:130]http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7460 ... 8hl.th.jpg[/img]

Interesting the new Honda rear wing with Renault like flap, only Davidson was using it.

Wurz with

And without

This :

Notice also the little fins on the Williams nosecone. About the Williams, that finally doesn’t kills your ears anymore with horrible TC (that is BMW-Sauber duty now... guess why...) what particularly impressed me is the way it literally hates kerbs.

I took lot more pics but these are the most interesting things, I’ll post something more and a couple of impressions about the cars when I get a bit of spare time, don’t know when this will happen since we have lot of work lately and the boss already didn’t like me “jumping” the morning...

Since you all liked them (thanks ;-)) here a few more.

At the track I was convinced that Button was using a normal rear wing but looking at pics I found that it was different from the usual one, it has the same flap as the wing on Davidson car, difference is that the main element is straight or almost straight and it has the connections between main element and flap :
[IMG:152:130]http://img433.imageshack.us/img433/4526 ... 4sd.th.jpg[/img]

According to an Italian magazine Red Bull was going to test with an heavily modified car result of Newey treatment, but honestly watching at pics I didn’t find visual differences (besides a low df wing obviously) on the two cars present compared with the one used in races so far :

DC was apparently pushing hard yesterday morning, a few times missed the braking point or locked tyres at first chicane. He was also attacking kerbs, at both chicanes, with decision. Don’t know if he was fast but certainly was entertaining.

Notice the mics on the background.

I already mentioned that I hate BMW TC ? Well, I’ll say it again, after a few laps you feel the desire to go in BMW pits and kick a few asses... it was this way with the V10 and didn’t change with the V8.
The “funny” thing is that it doesn’t even look particularly effective, more than once at the exit of first chicane the rear end was sliding considerably.
Apart of that JV had a couple of “moments” at Roggia because he was a bit too aggressive on the second kerb, after a little trip with the two left wheels on the gravel trap he became lot more cautious. Nick was clean as usual, I always liked the way he drives.

Toyota didn’t make many laps yesterday morning. When I arrived at the track, at 9.30am Trulli had a problem that kept him in the pits almost whole morning so only Ralf was on the track, but not very often.
It’s sort of tradition, every year one of the first pictures I take at tests is a Toyota getting back to pits on a truck...

Amazing.
Trulli got back on the track past noon so could do just few laps (morning sessions ends at 12.30)

Yesterday was also the first time I heard V8s, actually, I already heard the Toyota V8 last year in September but it was still a non definitive version and revving quite low. Didn’t find many differences in sound with the V10, obviously there are differences and you would very likely distinguish the V8 from the V10 easily if both were contemporarily on the track, but there are differences also between the various V10 and the various V8 anyway so...
At the end another remark without pictures (I’ve actually one but it’s blurred so it’s pointless...), Toro Rosso tested briefly also with a bodywork modified on the sidepods, no chimneys and several gills instead.

That’s it. Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to go at variante Ascari (actually I choose not to because in the morning the sun is right in front of grandstand, it’s annoying and not good for pictures) so the comments are limited to the two chicanes, hope you found them interesting anyway.

I could look at photos all day trying to pick the differences.

BAR's new rear wing is starting to resemble a front one with those sharp corners.

I LOVE F1 cars in low DF configuration.

I believe that big box is a infra red guage for the tyres. Similar to McLaren (although they use 4 smaller ones).

Those ears used to be cool... Now they look ugly. Oh well.

About the huge thing that Wurz lost, I barely saw it had a circular hole at the front but can’t really know what was inside. Last year at the August test Williams used it too and there’s a thread somewhere about it. At the time I said that it was possibly a “radar” FIA was asking Williams to test, but now I’m not really sure about it, for what I know it could be everything...
Unfortunately the man who was holding it didn’t give me time enough to take a good look. I could just take that pic (while he was murmuring annoyed something like “hurry up I’ve no time to waste”) and before I could even look at the front end he was already running away with his bicycle to carry it back to the pits.

I said that the noise of BMW TC of the BMW Sauber (V8 ) is the most irritating, just like it was the most irritating on the Williams BMW (V10) last year.

BTW, it wasn’t Kubica, it was Heidfeld.
