I wonder how many copies F1201x would sell if they had physics engines similar to rFactor's.

Or better yet, iRacing or NKPRo. the two best sims out there,

Yes but then the f1201x games would be a totally different genre, atm theyre meant to be a compromise between sim and arcade. Codemaster's made the games so that they could be picked up and played by both class of gamers.

To be honest i would not even call it a sim. It simulates the atmosphere of F1 but not an F1 car.

For example. Can you adjust brake bias in F1 2011? Probably the most basic thing in a sim.

Yeah that kind of stuff is the reason it's a compromise between sim and arcade, its not a sim like rfactor, and its not an arcade like NFS. It has features of both, and elements of both that are missing.

i would say a game like Forza can be considered Simcade, a sort of hybrid where they use actual tire data from Pirelli to get some level of realism.

but F1 2011 is pure made as an arcade game physics wise, everything that has been done is by fudging numbers to make the car behave in a certain way rather then actually simulating the part and get the correct values from that.

In my Gran Turismo days I would have loved to do that, but nowadays.. no one really plays a game that long to get to the point where you start adjusting brake balance. Even in Gran Turismo (which is a good enough sim for me at least but not for the purists) I use driver skill first then car setup last; beating a race was about getting my techniques right and then adjusting the car. Those races were like the 2 hour races - deep into the 9x% completion depths. I aint playing that F1 201x game that long to warrant brake bias! the game is simply not fun - no need to play it to the end. I only play the game befoe GP weekends to learn the corners anyway.

Oh you better believe that. Sim racers do.

Casual gamers don´t :) GT5 is like Forza, not really a sim.

Remember you are talking to a through and through purist here ;)

If its online, should we do an F1technical team? :P
If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

Codemasters games have horrible physics. GT and probably Forza could be considered between an arcade game and a sim, which are miles beyond anything codemasters put out.

I have been playing rfactor with many mods since 2007 and it is the best racing Sim game I have experienced . After playing this game I was hooked to Formula1 because of so many adjustment we can actually relate it in the game play .

In 2010 Codemaster released F1 2010 and I was really happy because there wasn't one good mod in rfactor which has the graphic quality of it (I am not saying gameplay here BTW) . The problem with this were that even with broken nose one doesnot feel too much understeer (Legend level) and the car is too forgiving ie. when we go to a spin just press the brake and it holds it line .

With F12011 they have improved the graphic more and the braking point in the game almost correlate to the real thing (still we need to brake about 50m when compared to the real thing) . The suspension stiffness or softness can be felt easily and the car is not forgiving ie. if one spins braking won't really helps matter much . Except for some bad DRS line distances i.e. the race after which the game was launched like Monza , Brazil ,India etc ; the game has bridged the gap from a more Arcade type to (F12010) a mix with simulation . I agree that they should have given brake bias adjustment because it helps with the tyre management .

With the F12012 I expect these small issues to be solved but codemaster have really left the autosave mess even with the updates sometimes the loading crashes . Still I think I will play this more than rfactor as there aren't any nice 2012 mods as of now (I someone knows please tell).

If you want to drive the best F1 cars simulated (for commercial use)

You have Ferrari Virtual Academy (Kunoz Simulazione)
Or iRacing (Williams FW31)

The iRacing williams you can setup exactly like an F1 car pretty much. You even have the little flap on the front wing you can adjust once per lap.

I'm looking to build a desktop PC for when rFactor 2 comes out.

I was very impressed with the initial videos of the original Spa circuit, as well as Monaco circa 1967. A lot of the cars should look fantastic with the bump in graphics. What's going to be interesting is seeing how the tire wear models work out for the game since I know they were quick to make mention of it.

One game do avoid like the plague is Test Drive Ferrari Legends.

It's the worst racing game I have ever seen. Not that I had any expectations mind you, but I was not prepared for how awful it is.

rf2 is very tricky but it's a new "driving experience". Nothing comparable out there at the moment.
