BBC: F1's Greatest Driver

Post

So Fernando is 10th today, and so far I don't have too many complaints yet, although I will admit I don't have intimate knowledge of all the drivers from times gone by (read pre-1996 era) because I never got to watch them.

I rate Alonso very highly, so he provides a bench mark for me on the list, and to be honest I can't think of 10 drivers that I would consider better than him so it should get interesting as to just who they've decided to put above him. If Vettel pokes his head within the top 10, and I think he will, Benson is going to get slated.

I do however have two small niggles with the current list so far though:
1. Lewis - I understand why he is on the list but I feel he is too high, and maybe he is just not deserving yet.
2. Gilles Villenure was clearly a great F1 racer, but he only had 6 races and I feel we only ever got to see the best of him unlike many others who we also got to see at their worst.

There is also an argument, with the exception of Schumacher, that no current driver should go on that list yet.

Its only at 10, and the big guys are yet to come, what are your thoughts on the list thus far and those expected to appear higher?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit - this is Alonso's posting, the other previous 10 can be found at the bottom of the page.

List so far;
Number 10 - Fernando Alonso
Number 11 - Alberto Ascari
Number 12 - Gilles Villeneuve
Number 13 - Nigel Mansell
Number 14 - Mika Hakkinen
Number 15 - Lewis Hamilton
Number 16 - Nelson Piquet
Number 17 - Emerson Fittipaldi
Number 18 - Jack Brabham
Number 19 – Graham Hill
Number 20 – Jochen Rindt

They stated at the beginning of the program that it was collective - I'd take that to mean including DC, EJ and Muzza's input alongside Benson's - and maybe Gary Anderson. Given the people involved I'd like to think that the list holds quite some credibility. If only Benson didn't take part, then I'd maybe give it higher credibility!

They've stated since the start that 4 current drivers are going to be on the list. I don't think we will ever see any such list without Schumacher. No matter what you think of him - there's no doubting his talent, and that (statistically) he is the greatest F1 driver to grace the planet. Statistically, that is. So that puts down Schumacher, Alonso and Hamilton as existing drivers.

Which brings us to 1 more driver from the current grid...

care to publish the list here?

I cannot see Vettel or Hamilton being on the list just yet. Alonso and Button have been around long enough but neither belong in the top 10 IMO. Alonso has been around nearly 10 seasons now and only has 2 WDC to show for it.
Schumacher had 5 WDC after hs 10th full season. the best Alonso can achive in that time frame is 3.
Button, 1WDC in 11seasons. sorry nowhere near great. Not even been close in the other seasons.

Vettel, 2 WDC in 5 seasons, thats a projected rate similar to Schumachers so I'dsay he is more deserving of a spot in the top 10 than Alonso.
Senna took 3WDC's in his 10 year career and Prost took 4 in 13years.

I guess Moss is n this list too.....?

I don't think too many people would argue with Schumacher being No.1, it's that mystery current driver who I suspect may cause a storm in a tea cup.... I think Jensen is great, but he's not top 10 though (joking obviously :D )

I updated the OP.

Generally I agree with what you are saying. Moss has not appeared yet, but I suspect he will debut further up the list.

Thanks.
I guess once the complete list is published it will create more of a converation point.
As it stands I just can;t see why ALonso would be in 10. I'd sa more like 13 or 14.

Its predicatablw that Senna will be #1, Prost or Schumacher in P2, Fangio in he top 5.
Since this is a BBC list, I guess a heavy dose of bias will also be applied...

I think both Vettel and Kimi should feature on this list, but not higher than Alonso. I can't see Vettel not being on the list and if there are only 4 contemporary drivers, I don't understand why Kimi isn't on it but Lewis is.

These lists of opinions are so open, do we have any idea what defines thier term of 'great' drivers?

Personality?
Points scored in lifetime?
Qualitative skill?
Quantitative achievements?
Biggest change to the sport?

I can't make a good opinion without knowing what the question is based, it then becomes so personal.

Personality, man, Button, Coulthard etc
Points scored, short time... well Vettel, but i don't think he is 'Great'
etc etc it goes on.

My first though, if you said the greatest f1 driver ever, the first person, with no fore-thought, that enter my head everytime is Schumacher.

I agree that apart from MSC, no current drivers could fit in that top 10, its just not feasable, most have hardly the years under them, and those that have really haven't shined enough to make them the greatest.

I understand though, that this top# drivers thing must 'toe the line' Senna will be number 1, probably quite rightly too, but i will always believe that MSC racing today is amazing in itself, this guy raced against senna, and he is still there, he really is modern f1 history personified.

And why should Vettel be in top 10? What makes him superior than Alonso or Hamilton? His finger? Double champion title with cheating Red Bull??? Very unsporty behaviour?

Well said my man. He's also raced in various eras, including the manual shifts :D .

They may mark Schumacher down because of his 2nd career diluting his statistics.

But if they were going to consider only his first career, you'd be very hard placed not to put Schumacher on the #1 spot.
His 1st career statistics are incredible, and perhaps unbeatable. He had a win in every single full year of competing.

I think BBC might want to put Senna up there for sentimental reasons, but think that'd be more for emotion than anything else. The stats don't lie.
