The biggest advantages he had were his talent and determination. His interest in technical side was a consequence of that, not the other way around.

Maybe he would not dominate the grid like he had back then, but that is because he was the guy who sat the bar so high. I have no slightest doubt he would be recognized as great driver had he made his debut now. After all, he was the guy who could beat the full time race driver's time on his test debut.

I have read about Senna -thatr one of the reasons Honda was so in favour of him -because he was so much into the development..and dragged the engineers to supply the hardware so he could do his thing. One example was his pedantic work with throttle linkages ,he spent days on these to optimise the throttle response and even had different linkages developped for different tracks and weather conditions. Honda took a lot of information out of this in their development of a traction control.
Berger when arriving at Mclaren was completely blown away by the sheer effort Senna was prepared to put into weekend preparation and had to completely reorganise his life to match Ayrton -realising he would not be able to beat him with driving talent only ....He was quicker in the fast bits but overall Senna was more metronomic and he had that ability to dive into another dimension for qualyruns.

Still, pretty tough of Piquet Jr. to say that about someone who is dead.

Ok so what about Monaco 1992, Donington 1993, Brazil 1991 its not a "fanboy love",your not telling me that race was a fluke are you?

One thing I will say is Donington is somewhat overrated.

Senna himself even said his drive there wasn't anywhere near that impressive since he had TC and the like for that drive.

Estoril was by far the best drive he ever had in the rain. Canada 1989 might have been up there had his motor not blown.

Senna fanboyism:
He qualified the Toleman rediculously far forward on the grid very often in top 10 AND he gave Toleman a podium three podium finishes -remarkably in silverstone when his teammate cecotto had a severe practise accident breaking both legs..
he really was that special and it showed ,instantly.
Brundle ,Bellof ,yes they all debuted with lesser material but Bellof really did only shine in Monaco .

Fer sure but some people seem to wear their heart on their sleeve..The world did not start and stop with this very flawed person. Whilst very talented Senna brought something to the sport which was not altogether desirable to many of us.

I think there is some truth in what Nelson says. Senna's talent would be suppressed by the Pirelli tyres. If he was in a Mercedes, more than likely he would not have won a race not named China or Monaco.

I Think he put up a decent showing against Alonso. If he had stuck with the team, he would have grown into a very good driver IMO.
