Racing & Sports Car Chassis Design

Post

Authors: Micheal Costin and David Phipps

In about 1967 I bought this book. I lent it in about 1990 and I am still
waiting for a kind friend to return it. Well --- it became an obsession to find another copy. Sites on the net list it from $180USD to $2100USD.
Why is it such an important book? It was written by Micheal Costin
( Cos(worth ) while he was a designer at Lotus --- Mr Costin also contributed or designed the first aluminum monocoque while at Lotus: the
Lotus 25. This book is the authority on spaceframe design. To quote from
the Preface "...and Keith Duckworth, who helped with the compilation of Appendix 111 ... " If anyone would like a copy... for $28USD , search
http://www.abebooks.com Contains technical anaylsis of all engineering aspects
of spaceframes and suspensions of the day, construction details and material specifications and the Appendix 111 written with Keith Duckworth which offers the necessary math equations. Want to learn suspension load paths to chassis? This is the book to get. There's a wonderful illustration of the chassis and and "invisible" body of the " Birdcage " Maserati , The Masaerati Tippo 61 --- This alone will justify the purchase to your companion. Whats not to like --- non?

Thought someone at F1technical might enjoy this book

Now that you've mentioned this book...

Having in mind that Tomba and Principessa always ask us to submit our own ideas for improvement of F1T it occured to me that perhaps another section could be added - Bibliography or just Books. It would contain list of books dealing with F1/racing technlogy and it would be populated by forum members.

Any comments?

Got it safely tucked away on my bookshelf - was one of the first technical books I bought ;)

Manchild --- Good idea! Then anyone with a scanner could send information to answer specific questions.

On a related subject. How about tools. I saw a tube cutter on eBay for $62 USD---clamp down the tube up to 2 inches in diameter--- attach a hole cutter and a 1/2 electric hand drill or use a drill press, and cut the tube to perfect shape for a weld. A tool section on F1T could be an asset.

I think you're missing a 'no' before the puedes in the qoute.

The book sounds good, but if it was written in '67 wouldn't a lot of things be different now? Well, maybe not different, but updated with new formulas, materials, designs, etc.?

Yes, like an catalogue of books.

great idea :)

The book was written by the best designer of spaceframes at the height of their development. Adapt modern suspension technology, the technology of "a piece of pipe " has not changed in 45 years. Buy torches or a MIG welder, a bunch of steel tubing, and your companion will not see you for months. A blessing or a curse? I share from a fondness for my F1 brothers

Thank you Jagboy for your help with my Spanish. I am a Canadian and have meet a lovely woman from Columbia, I may need your help with Spanish. Who knows perhaps we will marry and I will invite you to the wedding. Help me charm her Jagboy.

Jagboy I have read your profile and you are a young man in highschool? The book is valued up to $2100USD. Buy a copy that is in excellent condition on the site I mentioned. Keep it until you graduate from high school It's increase in value may have increased enough for a year's tuition in Mechanical Engineering. There, I have helped a young man and gained Good Karma.

Even though I am perhaps 40 years older than you, I may still need your help in that other matter I mentioned.
