I would actually say the person who wins this year will convince me more that they are special. If it's vetted, he'll go up greatly in my ratings. This years cars have been (reasonably) evenly matched.
I tend to agree with that, this year means more than most years with the cars being much more evenly matched, and there being 7 world champions on the grid.
Surprisingly though I feel that whoever wins the championship is irrelevant in many ways. The three top drivers, Ham, Vet and Alonso have cemented their place as the greatest drivers currently in F1, and perhaps of all time. It is a shame that only one can claim the title this year, because in my opinion all of them have a reasonable claim to be 2012 best driver.
Alonso's performances this year have been the best that I think I have ever remembered from any driver. Win or lose the WDC he ranks as one of the greats, and has proven sufficiently to me that he is the best all round driver of his generation and of the current drivers on the grid for his all round ability - top qualifier, top racer, top team leader. I would dearly love him to win the title this year, I think he deserves it more than any other driver, but even if he doesn't he shouldn't be worried. After this year many may well consider him a contender for the greatest of all time and I might have to agree.
Lewis has been desperately unlucky this year, let down by his team, and being taken out in two races. I really feel bad for him, and this is after last year when I hated everything about him - I was completely fed up with his antics but there have been little repeats of that this year and he has won me over once again. The guy has pure speed, he is a great racer, however I feel his talent betrays his ability to develop a car. By right, the title this year should have been his this year.
Of the big 3 Vettel is perhaps the least deserving this year, but he has shown something which I have not seen of him before. Namely he is a top class racer, in addition to being very fast. I don't want him to win the title, as I feel there are other people more deserving, however he has shown he can get the best result out of a bad situation, something I wasn't sure of before.
