600 Million Viewers? HOW?

Post

F1 prides itself of being the the largest television spectacle after the FIFA Worldcup and Olympics with a claimed viewership of over 600 million.

How is this even possible considering the core viewership in Europe for the last race was
Germany - 11 million
Italy - 10 million
Spain - 7 million
http://f1broadcasting.wordpress.com/201 ... nd-europe/

France - probably 2 million
UK - probably 4 million

Australia - probably 4 million

only other country with a large enough audience in millions must be Brazil

So where does the remaining millions come from? F1 is popular in Asia, but i am sure that the remaining 500 million views are from there.

Is 600 million just a myth? or is it the entire seasons viewership of 30 million a race avg, which is hardly exciting a number.

I tend to believe it's the overall viewership figures for the whole season..I remember reading somewhere that Olympic events attract more than a billion viewers but that's for the whole event.

If F1 attracts 600 millions viewers per race then the total viewership over the season would be humongous, i.e. 12 billions, which is a bit unrealistic to say the least.

Singapore GP alone has attracted around 360m tv viewers over 4 years. So 600m for 20 races is conservative

Don't forget that some of us get terrible local coverage and have to resort to grey-area internet streams that are not counted (or maybe an estimation is, in fact, taken into account?)

Yeah it could be over the year. At least that's what the sponsors are in for.

I've heard it refereed to as an "audience", which I interrupted it as, 600 million unique people watched F1 throughout it's whole season. But not all of them were repeat viewers. Some might have only tuned in for one of the special races like Monaco, or maybe their local race.

So that way, the total season viewership would be far greater then 600 million, but it would not be 600 million x 20. You would need to figure out how many are repeat viewers.

I've never had a source that I'd put 100% confidence in though.

Even then 600 million is quiet a stretch

I read that the Tour de France attracts 1 to 2 billion world wide viewers per year.

The crazy thing about this is that the Tour itself doesn't charge a dime to attend its stages.

Well, 600 Mil / 20 races a year = 30 Mil/race.
Which are basically Germany (11), Italy (10), Spain (7) and the UK (4).
However, this is for the season final in Brazil, which is like a guarantee for an exciting race. I guess that the audience drops to a 1/4 for these boring races on the new tracks.
