Has Bernie gone Bananas? 50 year contract offer Melbourne GP

Post

No I wasn't smoking the hubbly bubbly, what the heck is going on? The only reason he would offer such a deal is because other countries have decided to call it a day from Formula 1?

If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

For the big payout when they decide they no longer want the race so have to cancel the contract?

Near impossible at this point in time, the Victorian State Government have stated that once the 2014 deadline approaches before expiry in 2015 they will not re-new unless the FoM drops their participation and licensing fees which Bernie will never do.

Longer term contracts (although 50 is crazy) to boost CVC cash flows. His half term report card to the shareholders looks even better and he doesnt get replaced :D

On the contrary, the reason for making such an offer is precisely because other countries want to host F1 races. No one with any sense will sign a 50 year contract for a F1 race. Bernie knows this and knows that the Aussies will have to say "no thanks". That then frees up a slot in the calendar which can then be sold to a country that is prepared to pay FoM silly money for a race - and definitely lots more than the Aussies will be paying for their race slot.

He gets to look like the good guy whilst the current Aussie GP guys get to look "ungrateful" etc.

It's exactly the sort of game that Bernie plays.

Good thinking right there.

Well the old dog still has plenty of tricks in his treats bag!

I would be interested to know the reaction of the Australian GP officials xD and even more so the Victorian state Government! 8)

No government can sign a meaningful contract for a sporting event that will last 50 years, and if you actually read what he said he wasn't proposing that.

2013 season must be starting soon because what better way to draw attention to it? Make an asinine remark about a 50 year deal.

What is asinine about saying something like "I'd make a 50 year deal if I could"?

Although there was no actual formal offer of a 50 year contract to Melbourne (that we know of), we can assume that Melbourne, or at least Australia, will continue to host an event. Why? Because they're one of the few countries left that can actually afford it.

20 races - 20 countries. G20.
• South Africa
• USA
• Canada
• Mexico
• Brazil
• Argentina
• China
• Japan
• South Korea
• India
• Indonesia
• Russia
• Turkey
• EU
• Germany
• France
• UK
• Italy
• Saudi Arabia
• Australia

Anyone see any similarities? What about rumours of future races being hosted? It's hardly coincidence.

I've heard a rumour there was an announcement made at the Adelaide Clipsal 500 yesterday.

I doubt it would be about holding the F1 race in Adelaide after 2015, if that's what you're alluding to?

Thats exactly what I mean. I've talked to a couple people who say there was an announcement made yesterday. F1 returning to Adelaide in 2016.
I've asked for clarification about who made the announcement but they haven't got back to me.
Couple of tweets about it too.
