I think it'll be a cold day in hell before Mike Coughlan finds himself working for Ferrari. :D

I'm not sure all of the onus can be placed on Fry's shoulders. F2012, he had minimal influence on the cars concept. F138, certainly more responsibility, but it's the last year of current Regs, so it's a bit deeper/fundamental than what simply meets the eye. I think 2014 is a question for everyone... If Ferrari nail it and get it right while the others do not, I don't think it can be attributed solely to Fry. So my personal opinion is 2015 is a make or break season for this Engineer. Not this year or next. F1 is much too complicated to expect results from an archaic methodology(relative terms) and I think if he doesn't produce a winner by the end of the 2015 season, it's time to reevaluate options... Forza Ferrari!

I'd say that's a pretty safe statement. But, he does know a lot about the 2007 Ferrari.

Fry should go, and others with him if the 2014 car don't work. 2015 with the same people is not an option for me if the 2014 fail.

2014, as a year for massive new regs, is no place to determine Fry's fate, imo. It needs to wait till 2015. You cannot judge the engineering of any of the cars next year whether good or bad as someone I think will get lucky and many will not. Lotteries are not a place to determine talent. If Ferrari, or any top echelon team for that matter, is a dud next year, i say see how they improve throughout the year. If they suck it and are still crap by end of the year, then 2015 should determine fate, but I don't think it's wise to nix a smart guy like Fry next year if the car is not a winner. I know it's subjective and many will disagree, but imo, a huge new regs year is no place for determining if a guy of Fry's caliber should be booted out.

In the past, "huge new regs" have meant a dominant car from Newey. He seems to be able to come to grips with new regs more quickly than anyone else. Fry better hope Marmorini comes up with a very special turbo engine.

I definitely agree, but next year the engine is going to be a big differentiator and that wasn't the case with the last reg change. We shall see how it pans out, but as Chuck said, I think it wouldn't be right to fire one of your key guys during next season if a team doesn't get it right.

Hi Donskar, yes indeed that seems to often be the case as Newey is a stellar engineer, but Brawn and Co found a way to crush all comers from 2000 till 2004-5, so it absolutely positively can be done. In my view, Ferrari seems to have been preparing for 2014 for some time now with all the people the have been hiring from other teams. If Luca pulls it off and organizes a dominant group like he did in the past, it would be amazing and a real testament to his abilities. I am really looking forward to what 2014 brings. If you haven't been following the new engine reg discussion in the other forum I suggest checking it out. It is a superb thread.

Fry IMO is doing a fantastic job. If not for redbull ferrari would be WDC a couple years in a row by now.
The cars were always relatively strong and very solid performers. Mclaren has produced a very good car last year, but i beleive on average in the past 4 years ferrari has had more consistent machinery.
Even taking into account Massa's crap driving, they've done pretty well to have really good constructors finishes with the cars they've had.
For Sure!!

Glad to see some discussion on the men behind the cars. As to an earlier comment (chuckjr) that Brawn and the "Dream Team" dominated for several years . . . Yes, absolutely true. And that's one of the reasons I believe Rory B will be remembered (eventually) as one of the more under-rated F1 designers.

I think Massa is unlucky, he had good pace in the last race, his car just quit on him abruptly. In Silverstone he was hit with a puncture, in Canada he was unlucky but also had good pace. The race before that his suspension failed, and before that he was on the podium. I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised if he has more "bad luck" especially now that Alonso seems to have practically thrown in the towel. Basically he's admitted defeat to Red Bull and Vettel, it's just that they can't seem to design something that allows him to win, maybe the Ferrari can go fast enough to beat Vettel, but Alonso just can't extract the pace from the car. I think the cars are so close together that drivers can make a difference, and that the difference from the Ferrari to the Red Bull isn't 4 tenths but that Alonso can't find those tenths.

Alonso hoisted an inferior Benneton above the likes of M. Schumacher himself, and brought the dream team and Ferrari to their knees not so long ago--thus ending (essentially) the career of a 7 time champ. The feat was so impressive Ferrari paid the likes of none other than WDC Kimi himself to sit out a season WITH pay to land Fred. I don't think Luca would have done that w/o good reason.

With all due respect, I don't think the problem is Alonso and his ability to find time...the problem is Newey with darn near an unlimited budget.

EDIT, sorry I hit send to soon.

As for Massa, I agree his luck is pathetic. Oddly I see similarities in Webber. I wonder if just some guys carry strong negative energy to a team for some reason, and all the problems uncannily fall to them. It's very odd, but seems to happen each year. Incredible to think Massa was 1 point away from a WDC just 5 years ago. Would have been interesting to see how that would have affected his career.
