Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The chamber is for accoustic tuning.
It is a simple cylinder with one open end, that means at the fundamental frequencies there is a a standing wave created in the cylinder that has a really high amplitude. This higher amplitude super imposes over the existing waves in the exhaust stream and translates to extended pulses in the exhaust stream and hence better scavenging of off throttle blowing and also a smother flow of exhaust gas to the diffuser.

The Beam wing is influenced by the same on the RB9! Newey has so many admirers in rival teams. They can't help but to try his solutions.

surely not the volume is too small to provide a functionality like that .A Helmholtz device is there to tune the behaviour of the engine induction/exhaustsystem system at a specific rpm /load combo .
One can assume the chosen exhaust does have a peak or a dip in performance at some point of the usable power range affecting car performance /driveability ..it is a ways of tuning the exhaust pulses .
With the Helmholtz setup you can get rid of the dip or a unwanted peak -it is crude but effective -but only at a certain point of the useable range of the engine ..but as variable intake length and exhaust are outlawed you use what is allowed...

In a way you are correct in saying that it helps off throttle blowing. However you are totally wrong when it comes to how. It does not "collect" exhaust gasses on throttle and release them off throttle. It simply acoustically tunes the exhaust to have more mass flow going through at low to no load on the engine. Either that or it is widely known that they can also be used to tune the exhaust flow track for track.

Looks like they removed the mini double diffuser too?

That rear wing/beam wing is simply pure porn. It´s beautiful!
Mercedes 1-2 in the race, come on now boys.

Edit: Putting them on the new page, if that´s ok.

Nico Rosberg running with DRD in FP1. Notice the small pitot tube inside the DRD inlet.

Probably to force as much as air as possible over the front tyres. I think that gives a net reduction in drag. Probably that wing will stall.

One of the benefits of the multi-slot front wings is that you can run greater angle of attack before you get stalling of the wing. That front wing might not stall at all.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Nico ran the high downforce front wing with DRD i think, the "old" camera mount is on the Monza spec wing.

The whole session or just the instal lap with DRD?

Would there be much benefit running the DRD on the W04 at Singapore?
