Pay drivers are not new, they've always been there.
I'm not saying that pay drivers are a recent phenomenon, but the impact of a pay driver has significantly increased over the last years. Almost half of the field is dependant on at least 1 pay driver. And Sauber is a team that has always tried to give talented drivers a ride, and even they are now completely dependant on the money a driver brings... It's just sad to see this.

Lotus, Sauber, Williams, Caterham, Marussia and in a certain extend Force India are all dependant on at least one or preferably two pay-drivers...
It's not sad, it's just the way things are at the moment. These teams want to stay in F1, and to do that they need all the money they can get so they hire pay drivers. If you want to get touchy-feely, check out reddit's r/formula1.

That's exactly how everyone is reading it I assure you, and the denial in this thread is palpable and a little pathetic.

Announcing a driver you are signing 'for the future' at 9:30 at night doesn't say a great deal, does it? The reality is if the Red Bull team actually wanted him he would have been signed and sealed weeks ago.

Read what someone like Adam Cooper or any other Formula 1 watcher worth his or her salt is saying. The political situation at Red Bull is what it is and my like or dislike of Ricciardo won't change that. You don't announce a driver you truly believe in via the back door at 9:30PM. Everyone knows that.

The rest of the long-winded diatribe of a comment tells me that some people are taking this very personally.

At one time Peter Sauber would have the balls to reject no-hopers - Enrique Bernoldi being a case in point. The situation is rather different now.

I do read and also have friends that are closely allied within various aspects of the F1 game.

As for the rest, it's not personal, I just think a lot of what you've trotted out is unsubstantiated personal opinion you masquerade as fact as well as being rather petty to a guy that's out their having a go and doing pretty damn well at it.

 Whatever.....

You're free to have your own opinion but the simple fact is a team does not announce the signing of a driver they believe in at 9:30PM. As for 'doing pretty damn well at it', he's been outscored by his team mate over the two seasons they've been together. Unsubstantiated? Hardly.

As for personal, it doesn't get more personal than a username with 'aussie' in it. :D

If you guys don't mind taking your argument elsewhere, Mr. Button would like to speak...
"Ferrari will always be an option for me," the 2009 world champion is quoted by Brazil's Totalrace, "but there have been no serious discussions.

"So there is definitely no chance to go there this time. I believe they will continue with Fernando and Felipe.

"But I did hear an interesting rumour today," said Button. "Someone told me about Fernando going to McLaren."

Alonso to McLaren because of Mercedes engine in 2014 (and drivers not good enough)
The rule of 2014 silly seaon - every combination of driver-team will appear at some point as a rumour, although this one kind of makes sense.

and it depends on the definition of pay driver,. I'm sure Santanders ~40M€ to Ferrari is pretty much tied to them having
the Spanish driver Alonso

I would LOVE to see Button and Alonso at Mclaren. I don't know why but this idea tickles me and now I really want it to happen lol

Oh my god, Ferrari are about to announce driver line up, they haven't signed anybody. Lotus's wait may be over. Not really, if not Ferrari it's going to be: will KR leave F1(?!) for couple more months. Last chance to throw your favourite driver in there, last chance to sell some clicks on outrageous rumour, last chance for teams and drivers to get some free publicity.

This silly season is in fact 100% boring, how will Ricciardo do is interesting but mildly. With Ferrari it's a bit like RB but without Webber being fed up and worse performing Massa, another +1 transition contract, or some change at nr 2.

Alonso was snapping pictures of the Tifosi at Monza at the end of the podium presentation. I found that rather curious. Suppose Ferrari replace both of their drivers?
