What Marko says means little, all RB YDP drivers are super talents until they are not needed. What can be questioned is timing of his promotion to F1 or motivation behind it based on previous choices (marketing). Now Vergne has a chance to look good and there was a reason Marko was positive about Sirotkin, he was preparing something more surprising.

Speaking of being prepared, Magnussen claims he's 100% ready for F1. I don't know about it, season in GP2 where he could be out-paced by the likes of Cecotto or Colletti would help to judge it better. The problem is some mistakes might happen and reputation of "next big thing" would be at risk. Reputation seems to be more important than development, the less you do the more can be claimed as da Costa's example painfully showed.
first time Magnussen turned a wheel in a F1 car was at the YDT in Abu Dhabi 2012 and he set fastest time on the first day,
he was also fastest on day one of the Silversone YDT, and he has been unbeatable in the last races in WSR
if he is not ready who is?

Speed is merely one factor when second-tier teams select a driver. Money, marketing, and poliitcs are much more important. NOT saying Kyvat is NOT deserving. Only asking that you remember:

Why? His figures stack up better than others, and he seems well worth taking a put on!
How does his figures stack up better then Da Costa´s?
Because he´s second in the GP3 championship?

Seems to me this is a proper PR stunt for Red Bull and Russia.
Da Costa - 13th & 3rd GP3
Kvyat - 2nd GP3.

I like Da Costa but he's been unable to provide a WsR title challenge and so fallen by the wayside. That's the F1 business.

Renault 2.0 NEC
DC 1st, Kvyat 2nd.
As you can see it´s quite futile to pick and choose.

Well i think anyone who watched the races would understand how he was unable to mount a challenge when the equipment was sh*t frankly. When did Magnussen or Vandoorne have to rebuild the car from ground up?
When did they have to run old engines?

Last year showed what he can do with proper equipment.
Comes in with 6 events to go, first time driving an F3.5 car, bangs in 4 wins and ends up 4th in the championship.

Kvyat hasn´t even driven a meter in a feeder series yet, he just got fast-tracked straight into F1.
And this article pretty much sums up why he was.
Dr Helmut Marko has characterised the promotion of Red Bull junior Daniil Kvyat for 2014 as a “no risk, no fun” strategy.

When asked on Tuesday about the 19-year-old Russian’s leap straight from GP3 to Toro Rosso, McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale said it was a “very big step”.

McLaren is bringing new Formula Renault 3.5 champion Kevin Magnussen and runner-up Stoffel Vandoorne through the ranks, but Neale suggested the move to the new turbo V6 rules next year is a big enough challenge “without throwing a young driver into the mix”.

“It has been done successfully historically by exceptional candidates,” he told reporters during the Vodafone teleconference, “but Formula One is a very high-pressure environment and very unforgiving.”

Kvyat, believed to be bringing Russian sponsors to Toro Rosso, surprisingly beat the hot favourite Antonio Felix da Costa – who finished his 2013 season behind Magnussen and Vandoorne – to the seat being vacated by Daniel Ricciardo.

“I believe I am ready to step up,” Portuguese da Costa said on Tuesday, “but the decision is made.

“It hurts, and today I am sad as are many others in Portugal, but I will keep working together with Red Bull to get into F1,” he insisted.

Marko, who heads Red Bull’s junior programme, defended the appointment of the three-years-younger Kvyat on the basis of his steady development throughout 2013, and his performance at Silverstone during the young driver test.

“So we wanted to take the risk and move a GP3 driver up to Formula One,” the Austrian told Germany’s Auto Bild. “No risk, no fun!”

Marko said he sees Russian Kvyat as “a mix between Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen”, because he has “exceptional speed and is a meticulous worker, but also very quiet and with good nerves”.

Earlier, it was suggested Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost considered Kvyat too young for F1, but he is now quoted as saying that out of the Russian, da Costa and Carlos Sainz Jr, Kvyat is “by far” the most ready for the 2014 seat.

http://www.f1zone.net/news/marko-says-k ... ice/20810/
He even got Tost to "change his mind" (obviously)
It´s a clear PR stunt performed by Red Bull.

Edit: Also, should say i don´t doubt Kvyat, i´m sure he´s fast and a good addition to the team but it´s quite clear after all the reports how they did everything they possibly could to not give DC a seat.

Everyone expects dC to get the seat.
  • Vandoorne says no because it´s only one year.
  • Razia reports there´s a seat available for pay drivers.
  • Italian media reports that Russian sponsors have pushed Kvyat ahead in the queue.
  • Kvyat gets the seat.
dC was never an option regardless of performance, it´s pretty clear i´d say.

I remember some Finnish kid going into F1 with less than 50 races under his belt. I think that one turned out alright.. Lets give the kid a chance!

Da Costa was never an option. Apart from when RB funded his WsR seat. Or when Marko said last month he was an option. He didn't challenge for the WsR title so he was overlooked. The same happened with Brendon Hartley in 2009 with Jaime Alguersuari. This is the nature of the RB Junior Programme.

Obviously they will pay for his seat. He´s in the development programme after all. And Marko talks a lot.

Kvyat wasn´t even on the schedule either! They wanted to steal a driver from Mclaren first of all, then saw that Russian sponsors came in and jumped dC to get money and more Russian presence.
They sold out and justified it by saying "ohh we like danger and taking risks".
No you like money and PR.

You don't put drivers in Formula 1 to 'take a punt' on. It's a farce, and what's more, it's turning into a dangerous farce.

Wow, he'd have to be bringing a huge bag of cash to get a 5 year deal from Williams!

Well, Red Bull took a punt on Vettel and it didn't work out too bad, did it?

5 year deal seems too much, though. Let's see how the actions unfolds.
