This isn’t new. Newey said the same in 2011, and his interest in the America’s Cup dates back to his days at McLaren.

What’s happened is that a journalist from the Telegraph asked him if he’d thought about when he’ll do when he stops working in F1.
Adrian Newey wrote: “I’m 54 now and there are lots of other things I would like to be involved in,” the Briton concedes over a coffee in India’s paddock.
“At some stage, I’m not exactly sure when, I do feel it will be time to become involved in other things.”

It’s an acknowledgement that time does move on, every year that goes past is year closer to him retiring from F1. It’s a non-committal bears poop in the woods comment. You’d get the same response from anyone at a similar age who's been in high profile job for a long time.
This reminds me of Sir Alex Ferguson who was perpetually about to retire according to journalists. Then when he did retire it took everyone by surprise.
