Caterham CT-05 Renault

Looks a bit like the Ferrari of 2012, now that you've painted the nose black, only its green not red...

It's fugly, but the front-on shot really makes me admire how much air they must be getting to the underneath of the car - or at the very least, how much more open it appears to be than eg the Ferrari/Merc solution.

It's not all a positive; they can't use the pylons (or simply don't, because I believe they can place them on the actual nose) as turning vanes. That'll give serious consequences when in a yaw.

This is the little car that could. Did what, 68 laps today? Leading the Renault teams, gettin' the job done.

The first two races will likely see many teams go dead slow or retire, so the "new" teams will be focused on bringing home a decent finish early on. A strong finish (12th or 11th) or even a points spot (10th or 9th) would pretty much lock up 10th in Constructors.

Maybe Caterham decided to shut off electric power and run on the 600hp gas engine only. They are 6 seconds slower than the current fast time, but if they can execute that decently for two races while Marussia retires with niggling problems then mission accomplished!

What if this team is more reliable with the renault engine because they paid for a less complicated package?
just thinking out loud.
For Sure!!

Isnt the package the same, but in collaboration with the Renault ppl they can package the package differently ? :P As in you dont order it to look like this but you make it look like this at the factory together with the Renault ppl, so perhaps no extra cost involved ?

The engine package won't be physically any different apart from the usual team made items and mapping, etc.

I'm quite impressed with Caterham. The car is damn fugly but you can't argue with todays performance. For Renault engine team, most laps and (probably irrelevant) quickest. I say well done and definitely the correct route was for them to be a bit baggy on packaging for the sake of reliability. May bite them later in the season but the strategy may well have paid off by then.

The other Renault teams say they dont have cooling issues. Engine cooling is not the issue for them. The problems are elswhere.
If the baggy sidepods were the real reason why Caterham did much more laps until now, the other Renault powered team would have adopted the same kind of large sidepods in order to run as much as possible.

Possibly, but Caterham are the only ones with baggy sidepods and the only ones doing quite well, relatively.

Also, I'm inclined to be sceptical when teams "announce" things. Look at RB with the upside down spring boll*cks on day one, Jerez.

Caterham was killing it again today. Despite their Renault boat anchor they did 98 laps!! Meanwhile, Marussia did only 4 laps due to AGAIN having niggling reliability problems.

Battle of the backmarkers is interesting. Marussia has the good engine, but Caterham has (apparently) the well-sorted car. Which one will have the higher placing in the first couple races? I think Caterham could actually outqualify Marussia despite the 100 hp deficit, and in the race it will be no contest due to Caterham's reliability.

The power deficit is a choice and it's temporary ;) but they are increasing the usable ERS/Engine power every day.

livery looks good, still think a blacked out broomstick and more white would be better. Looks more
like jaguar now.
