I see Honda uses a transverse mounting, how common was that at the time? Any other pics of transverse F1 engines?
Old man Honda had some ah, odd fixations, including those air-cooled V12 F1 mills..
& yeah that `65 transverse unit also featured a sophisticated ( & tricky) fuel injection system with variable length stacks.

The most fascinating was the 1968 3.0 V8, air-cooled, not by a fan but simply through air-stream.
But it all ended in tears;
It would only appear in one race,[3] the 1968 French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les-Essarts,[3] driven by Jo Schlesser.[3] Schlesser was chosen to drive the RA302 because normal Honda driver John Surtees (who was the 1964 world champion) refused to drive it[3] as he deemed it to be unsafe and labelled it as a "potential deathtrap".[4] This was proven on lap two of the Grand Prix; Schlesser crashed at the Virage des Six Frères section of the circuit and the car came to rest sideways against a bank.[4] The magnesium-bodied Honda and 58 laps worth of fuel ignited instantly, killing Schlesser[3] and destroying the original RA302.[4]

the answer is in the thread 'the stillborn McLaren V12 Lambo project' in the General Chat section
the Honda was based on the 1963 Maserati Tipo 8/F1, as was the Muira
see Sombrero's post, the last of the thread
Sure looks like a V8 from that shot, but mayhaps is, internal architecture-wise?

There was the Lancia Thema V8 (Ferrari) transverse FWD..
& Moto-Guzzi did a V8 GP 500.. Pix anyone?

didn't the 3 litre aircooled Honda have a cast 'water jacket' with a fan drawing air through instead of water ?
and a lot of oil cooling
Mr Honda's pet scheme, intended as a much quieter arrangement in a road car than usual air cooling schemes
