Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Has anyone figured out what the logic is of raising the mirrors?

That approach worked well for Brawn GP. Or maybe not.

I assume so not as to interfere with airflow over the side pods

I think you could be right there. My first impression was that it had to do with the new rear wing but Sauber seems to have taken the same approach.

No comparison. Brawn was a unique situation. Anyway, that's for another thread.

One concern I would have is the tight packaging on such a new motor............and we all know what that resulted in at Peter's last job. Will we see an ever expanding back end in testing?

Not really the same situation. It seems that Red bull weren't really working in concert with Renault so the engine installation was something of a surprise. Mclaren have been working closely with Honda on this engine for years now. I really hope they've got something competitive as it would be great to see fernando and lewis go head to head.

We've seen it before...
If consistently being 7/10ths faster than you is a "mind game", then yes Jenson, Lewis was playing "games" with you.

I suspect they've got several test cooling packages to try out, should what they've tested on the dynos etc be wrong.
The trouble for Red Bull was they left the development of the RB10 very late and did not seem to take as much interest in what Renault were doing as they should have done. And if anything you'd expect somebody of Peter's calibre to have learned lessons from those testing woes. Which were probably more to do with Newey demanding things fit his designs and not the other way round along with Renaults design flaws. You would hope that McLaren has been able to pass along useful information to Honda to avoid those kinds of issues to do with cooling.

I think the MP4-30 should give McLaren Honda a good platform to develop from, I'm not expecting miracles in the tests or the first half of the season. It's going to be a development year, hopefully with Honda's power unit showing it's true pace nearer the end of the season. I'm not holding my breath over McLaren Honda being in the fight with Mercedes and co just yet.

interesting comparison.....i'm not convinced that the mclaren solution is better
the ferrari it looks like has skinnier sidepods that have a smoother transition back to the diffuser and covers some of the rear suspension bits
Mclarens sidepods look bulkier with a more distinct move back to the centerline of the car after the bodywork passes the radiators....
looks like about the same amount of floor is exposed when comparing the design differences

Is it me or the ferrari is much longer? The distance between the seat and the read wheels seems much bigger
