Mercedes AMG F1 W06

I don't view it as a flap or wing extender as it's not extending the sidepod top leading edge, at least not in a sense with how Ferrari has theirs configured. A flow conditioner of sorts makes sense, but there has to be more to it than that.

It is to reduce the low pressure point that forms on the leading edge of the side pod. The air deflects and accelerates when it hits the rounded top edge of the sidepod, and that creates a low pressure zone, the guide vane keeps the air attached (or more so) to the top rounded edge of the side-pod.

Mercedes use W05 components on the W06 for the Tests ?

I think Mercedes want clearly more power from the V6 : Log exhaust give up plus the sidepots seems largers..

Yeah i noticed that on the first day. To me it looks like a horizontal flow conditioner with a vortex generator on top, which seems strange as i thought you would have one or the other.
There is one on the other side, it's symmetrical.

Doesn't Ferrari also have something similar?

For me this is all about common sense. The Sauber driver commented on how the Ferrari engine felt as powerful as 'last years' Mercedes engine. I would expect Mercedes to have found a lot more power, especially given the tubular manifold over the log manifold and the new timing they can use on fuelling; a big area for the teams to gan from, more so for Mercedes with their new exhausts, which the others already have. I genuinely think Mercedes do not care as much about headline times as the others and are concentrating on distance and reliability. I think the fact they can do this from the word go intimates they've got another fast car on their hands.

I don't expect anything to have changed to be honest; in a year of not very many rule changes, you don't expect a dominant team to slip too far down the pecking order, nor the other way around. Unless something very clever has been found. My £100 is on another 1-2 in the WDC and the WCC wrapped up relatively early. Nothing I have seen thus far tells me anything else.

Sidepods are not larger, in fact they are slightly lower. The engine cover is larger. Don't get the two confused.

They could possible be testing the auxilliary systems using a midly modified 2014 ICE. It is said that there were a lot of left over engines from 2014 and in light of te long turn over times of engine parts it might make sense...... Not sure but it is possible. They can test the ers for reliability and such. Look at Honda. Honda will change to two new versions of their engine before winter testing is over... Could be possible.

Oh look. People not talking about the car but complaining about the rules. Haven't we seen that before. My my.

I'm going to state this one final time. The discussion in this thread is only limited to the physical, technical aspects of the car. About parts we can "touch and see". Let me give a few examples what don't belong here:

-Technical rules freezing the length of Alonso's beard disallowing Rosberg to grow one in the first place.
-Inseason development of mclaren's livery, which is sure to bring 10s a lap.
-Worshipping of the god of Olympus Toto "Zeus" Wolf about how brilliantly he brough down Adrian "Kronos" Newey and Claire "Gaia" Williams.

Hopefully the guys we aren't able to stick to the rules are better at reading satire. Anyway, I'll remove everything non-conforming again. When, because it's never a matter of if, the topic derails into off topic jibber jabber yet again, it'll go into a 48h lockdown.

Why would they do this? Would it help the airflow to/over the monkey seat be of a more uniform nature, it looks to me like it would push the air more into the sides of the seat!

I know it`s a very minor detail but why would they not just continue the fin down.

I`m not sure if its just the pictures (not this one) i`m looking at but the rear wing also looks slightly further forward!

Hi Mattchu

I believe Mercedes will convert to a single rear wing support strut at some point in the future and the split has been designed to accommodate the strut.
