Charlie Whiting needs to get a paintball gun, so he will be able to shoot those that are out with red dye, to reduce the confusion of the elimination process..
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

This absolutely reeks of Bernie simply for the fact that everything is still “being worked out”. Not really. Bernie is waiting to see after testing if Merc has the same lead. If they do, he will release the hounds and turn all chaos loose by having all the cars out there in Q1 with most just pacing while others are frantically trying to set a time. Every race we see a driver of any top caliber from a top team simply make a mistake and go wide on a Q1 lap and have to restart. Now, with everyone on track it may take 3-4 rotations before a clean lap can be found and by then your tires are shot. With tires already picked for the races, teams cant adjust now—just how Bernie planned…uhhhh…”wants” it.

This whole thing is a freak show. If Ferrari is back on form and will compete we likely will see a tamed version of this, but if Merc is gonna walk away with it, its going to be an ugly Q1 for a lot of front runners one at a time over the season. Its DRS all over again…forced control of what should be a free field of competition, not a contrivance. SMH

Can we just cut to the final act and just hold all races in a Big Top, with Bernie in the middle holding a bullwhip? CVC can run the ticket booths and everything.

I might be in the minority here but I think this new proposed format can be quite fun, while I also see the danger that it gets too complicated and too confusing for spectators.

If in Q1 the teams have 7 min until it counts, there will be less runs on primes but most teams will use their option tires right away. Because if the times on primes are not fast enough the "big" teams will have less (or no) time to change tires and go for another run. Also it can be interesting if cars are about to be eliminated and are running against the clock to pass start/finish before elimination. However, this needs to be captured by cameras, therefore the TV coverage will play a crucial role here. If they show Ham cruising around while a Haas and a Renault are battling against the clock, each other and elimination....

However disadvantages for the smaller teams. They will need more fuel in Q1 as they have to be ready to run for the whole 16 minutes while teams like Merc can fuel up for three laps (outlap, timed lap, inlap) and thats it. Also advantage for bigger teams in terms of tire usage. Maybe no refueling during whole quali (Q1-Q3) could be a solution. Or a minimum amount of fuel that has to be filled into the cars before Q.

I dont think slow cars will be so problematic, you have them now as well. They have to move over just like now if they are not on a fast lap. And if a Merc is stuck behind a Williams on his fast lap, well, that is the way it is.

All laps, except out- and in-laps, are flying laps to all cars as I understand it. You go out, you go round and round, the music stops and everyone sits down. Slowest guy is out.

Remains to be seen if that's how it works but I don't think there's blue flags and I don't think cars will have to move over, ever.

That would be different of course. I was (and am) under the impression that you do not have to keep running if you think your lap suffices. But yeah, blocking other cars can be a problem. What if you do a intentional slow lap for your tires?

Btw: How awesome would it be to do Q like a game of musical chairs? Put chairs all over the circuit (one less than there are dirvers) and when the music stops everybody has to stop, get out of the car and find a chair. Whoever is left without a chair is out

My understanding was that you have to keep running until you are eliminated or the session ends...

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Which would be great if we had 2010 bridgestones and not so great because we have 2016 pirellis.

That doesn't sound right at all. You can't come in for a fresh set of tires after trundling about for 12 mins? Not that this dumb idea should ever be implemented....

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

What's the point of using primes in qualifying anyway. Just let the teams use the faster tire at all times in qualifying.

1. It's his dumb idea approved unanimously by the teams, why would they change their minds?

2. The fact that it's supposed to be delayed shows how he thought it through (again). Mid-season change, brilliant. Anyone still considers Ecclestone an F1 genius?
