Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Probably don't want them starting 2017 with bangs. They just need to show significant progress with
the Power Unit's overall performance.
I meant bang in positive way as in better than expected !!
Sarcasm ;)

I think the upgrades we'll be seeing now will likely be to test certain aspects of the 2017 PU.
Fuels and lubricants are a good area to experiment with. As they don't cost any tokens, just the
usual FIA rules applying about fuel samples.

Taffin - Renault:
"We know Mercedes is in front and that Ferrari is too, but we saw in the race, there is no problem getting past another car when it is needed.

"It's just emphasising the fact we have made big progress but there is still a way to go. I guess Ferrari is halfway to the gap we have got to Mercedes. Honda are catching but they are quite a way behind us."

"Not only Singapore, I think Suzuka, Austin, and especially Abu Dhabi, I think will be very good," the Spaniard told ESPN. "Even last year we expected a lot in Singapore and we were OK but we were not as good as Austin and especially Abu Dhabi. For whatever reason Abu Dhabi was really strong for us last year so I think it can be the same next year."

He also stated that his aim for those races is to be the third fastest team, behind Mercedes and Red Bull, and he thinks the latest improvements to the team's Honda engine will help.

"Let's try to be just behind Red Bull," he said. "The latest spec on the engine has some more power and some more deployment, so that helps us a lot on the straights. So if you have two or three tenths quicker on the straights you have two or three tenths less time at full throttle, so less consumption."

If Alonso is talking "two or three tenths", then that's pretty significant from Honda.

Power and deployment meaning better consumption he says also.

They're being awfully quiet again, seems like good things are coming.

Per straight! So expect more over a lap. Prepare for up to three quarters of a second.

That would be amazing. Hopefully not overly optomistic.

One would assume he was just talking in general terms, & that's not the actual gains they will be seeing (either from the previous Spa update or the one coming up next in likely Malaysia or US)

Alonso is referring to the CURRENT spec of PU introduced in Spa , not the forthcoming upgrade

Is Alonso on an old spec engine or the same one as button for Singapore? Because I remember a new spec one breaking in spa

I believe that once you introduce token upgrade you can not revert to old spec unit, so I guess Mclaren has also stocked ALO with few new spec PU's in SPA just in case, and that is why he got 35 place penalty as well.

Motorsport.com:
Hasegawa:
Hasegawa will not reveal too many details about what Honda is working on right now, but he is clear that the main focus will be on improving the internal combustion element.

"For next year, without tokens we can completely redesign the engine inside the regulations. So we started our combustion chamber and packaging from the zero point," he said. "The combustion and the ICE will be the biggest difference."

"We cannot disclose the complete package right now but the name of the engine – the size zero – all engines need to be smaller as a package. So we don't want to give up the name of 'size zero'. But of course we will repackage.

"But it is difficult to say what is different...we modified many areas but difficult to say if it is a completely different engine."
