Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Maybe Honda cant handle the technology yet.
According to the article is just a matter of time, it was taking more time than they expected and they didn't want to delay the update.

I asked a friend in the know and he states that to do Pre-Chamber and Trick Injector this year must also change everything else to get max benefit. They do not have enough tokens to do it 100% correct and about everything behind the driver would need be redesign. So tokens and time was their enemy!

I hope that means they have been doing a lot of testing!
My worry is that Honda may come back with a powerful engine but having changed layout substantially lack the reliability of the others.

A few months ago, I have a theory that the reason why Honda didn't introduce the CVCC/TJI is because of the position of the injectors.
My theory seems to be plausible based on the photo posted by crf1. Thanks for posting the photo buddy.

Honda injectors seems to be located inside the Vee as compare to other manufacturer which is located at the top of the engine head. TJI assembly is tall and require space which honda doesn't have. The impact of changing the location of the injector during the season might have significant impact onto a lot of things such as piston shape, engine head redesign, camshaft relocation, turbo ers mounting redesign, repackaging of the internals. By changing these items, they might used up a lot of token and doesn't give a significant increase in HP. The upside, Honda will produce an extra 15-20hp just like what renault did. Honda did admit that the current design is flawed because they are using the conventional design used in most of the current Honda Direct injection engines (side mounted injectors between the intake valve at a slight angle). Honda is looking forward to next year major engine redesign. I'm looking forward for the nerdy engineering stuff going into the engine.

**This is just my visual assumption. I'm still not 100% sure that the injector is located on top or in the vee but based on my gut feel, it seems like it.

That makes perfect sense Kalun! Sure it is speculation but with so many components having to (potentially) require relocation it may have been impossible under the token system.

Turbocharger is much, much higher than last year!

The injectors are not in the Vee though. Look again. You can see the fuel lines going to the top of the heads.

Also, in the pictures of the engine on display there is a different intake plenum I have not seen before as well as a much larger air filter box. To me it looks like a finished product, not something just thrown on for testing or display purposes, thoughts? The MGU-H is still housed in the V though so I wonder what revision of the engine this is. It is also highly unlikely Honda would display their latest and greatest designs for competitors to see/analyze.

From that angle you really can't tell much of anything. Although your initial analysis is correct it does appear as a conventional compressor, there's also the fact there's a lot we don't see.
