Alonso is overperforming drivers and not the car. If he would overperform the car, then he would cheat the laws of physics.
Alonso has this talent for driving around "problems" and changing his style to suit the car, most drivers try to develop a car to suit their style and are unhappy with anything else.
He also has an immense talent for making everything all about himself. The situation at the moment cannot be that of harmony at McLaren-Honda. He might be the best driver in the world, but he's perhaps the worst WDC I've seen when it comes to team ethos. The situation in the team at the moment is all about 'how do we give Alonso a competitive car?' and not how do we win as a team again. If you compare Hamilton and Vettel's PR the use of 'we' compared to the use of 'I' by Alonso is remarkable.

Alonso is a world class talent, but he needs to learn to be a team man. He might be the best driver of his generation and thoroughly deserves a 3rd title, but he is not bigger than McLaren or Honda.
Sorry my friend but I had to downvote this

Nowadays the only part performing as expected when they all signed in is Fernando Alonso, both retirements in Australia and China where chassis related (McLaren fault), and Honda... well, no explanations needed.

But to you the main problem when it comes to building a team on current situation... is Alonso ego??? #-o

Right now it´s all about providing Alonso with a good car because he´s the only one performing as expected, all the rest are missing their targets, as simple as that.

I told you some time ago this is not an school playground, this is F1, if someone is too thin skinned to cope with critcizism after performing poorly, then F1 is not his place. It would be a different matter if they all are performing similar, but that´s not the case, Alonso is performing while Honda and McLaren are not.

Sincerely, I know you don´t like Alonso even when you appreciate his talent, but insinuating Alonso is some sort of problem on current situation is so ridiculous I can´t believe you said this. Alonso is alleviating pressure from the team with his superb talent wich make us think the car is better than it really is. Without Alonso the team would receive a lot more criticism. Imagine if both cars would have performed at Vandorme level... #-o

Alonso is the only positive side of this team right now, none serious would criticize him while he´s supporting McLaren Honda team by himself right now

I think I heard that McLaren 3D printed part of their gearbox because it was too intricate to be machined, so who knows what can be printed.

The driveshaft issue is probably related to the drivetrain/engine vibration, not so much chassis weight-saving. Although being an outer joint it could just be something as silly as some contamination/debris.
something i personally thought is rather too 'coincidental' is that the driveshaft snapped/broke RIGHT after he had this position battle with Sainz. He dived right back inside when Sainz passed, then went over the wet patch, which lost grip, then went over a small bump and got back on the track and the next corner it was done for.
I think if he didn't had that incident he might have finished the race, but it's always talking easy from an armchair.

it rather shows that the driveshaft is a tad weak perhaps. also, it could have snapped a lap later anyway. it was just something too coincidental to me.

above all, it reminds me of Max' his father's issues in F1 when he was participating; whenever Jos Verstappen had amazing results, and was coming close to get those results, his car gave the ghost. Repetitive times it's said he was too 'hard on the car'. Whether that's true remains to be seen , but it wouldn't be outragously impossible imho.
Alonso was throwing the Mclaren around like 'an animal'. He did outstanding, but i think if that incident hadn't occured, he might have finished 8 or atleast 9th.
Seems plausible, possibly caused by increased Gs and loads that they didn't assess in preseason testing or simulations. This doesn't mean Alonso shouldn't push the car - he should drive at the limit and expose all weakness in the chassis and suspension. He could pick his battles and try to limp his car home, though he might end up getting overtaken by the end and miss out on P10 anyway. Obviously Honda would like Alonso to nurse his way into the points as I'm sure they're not paying him 40m to have fun, but it's more or less a blessing in disguise that the driveshaft failure happened so that it can be rectified.

The chassis if it is not able to withstand a battle is not good, ALO nor stepped on any strange element, made a good maneuver of aggressive driver and champion, 2 or 3 points are not worth at all, thanks to ALO now McHonda knows another weakness to correct . The base of the chassis and the engine is good, but it is necessary that it is able to withstand a fierce battle, to VER, HAM, RIC... you will not advance them if you are not extremely aggressive, that has to support the chassis

I didn't understand Alonso apologizing on the radio after the retirement. He said something along the lines that he had nowhere to go. Could he have done something to cause the failure ? Wasn't sure what that was about. Maybe I just misheard.

He just went out of the track trying to defend if I recall well, it looks like once the car gets out of the track gets broken for vibrations or other reasons, at least it is what I am getting as in Barcelona testing they got a kerbs and the car broke and last week a slightly touch and the suspension broke

so, one could assume they're building the Mclaren like Colin Chapman made the Lotuses' so light as possible, that it should decompose right after passing the finishline......
not really enjoying that, i get a sense of danger from such a thing.

Alonso is surely faster than Vandoorne, but right now they do not have the same parts so it is hard to compare them, and a little harsh on Vandoorne I think.

There's nothing here that hasn't been done in F1 before, this is more about the PR deal Stratasys have done with McLaren, probably in exchange for free 3D printers for the team. Force India have been using 3D printed steering wheels for the last year or so.

Not buying that, he wouldn't apologize for that.

They can use it to print prototype aero components or bodywork. This printer basically lays layer after layer of ABS plastic. If they use the black material or cover it with a wrap, we probably wouldn't notice a thing.

The usefulness of the printer is limited by its size, it can only print parts that fit inside it, the pictured printer is therefore fairly limited. You aren't going to be printing front wings with it.

On the other hand they probably have something more impressive back at the factory, this looks like more of a marketing exercise.

Disappointing to see double DNF from car failures. Pretty poor that 3/4 race starts are Mclaren caused DNFs. They can moan about the PUs all they want but the long and short is they don't have a chassis capable of lasting a race distance.

They regularly print brake inlet blankings and cascade/floor parts.

I looked Alonso onboard for 10 laps or so, car very very stable to drive no snaps or anything like that...looks good.
Alonso said he was the fastest on the corners, well, not taking this comment that seriously but it could mean that the car is actually good.
