Engine change needed but saying it's not calibrated so it'll be detuned for the race.

Do we read into that it is the new spec unit? You certainly wouldn't be saying that for a normal like for like engine change.

What does it mean that an engine needs calibration?

Well, if the new spec does go in, then at least they get some testing in a few days early.

I wonder what performance it will achieve detuned. Since the vibrations may be fixed, they might at least be able to shift in the optimal range and perhaps not have to fuel save quite as much. Still, I'm erring on the side of "slow"

Not just engine parameters like ignition timing and fuel maps, but also ERS managment, such as deployment and harvesting strategies, along with boost maps, throttle maps and brake by wire settings.

I expect that they did those things with experience of past two races.

Okay I understand it is probably a nightmare to setup, but shouldn't they already have a base to work with? Can't they "upload" their last parameters they used on last PU? Or I am missing something and every PU needs a specific and different calibration?

Well even if it is the exact same spec of PU to the 1 that was being run it will be in a different state as far as hours run. I would be that these PUs are complicated enough that the variables between 2 identical specs still require a period of optimization.

I don't think that identical spec engines would require much difference by way of settings, If true it suggests quite a difference between specs.

However, there are concerns within McLaren that the MGU-H problem will recur in the race.
We cannot complete a lap or doing qualifying. I don't care too much about the driveability if I cannot finish a race so far this year, or if I cannot finish qualifying now.
True point.... :(

UPDATE - it's the MGU-H, no PU change for Alonso although debris from failure may mean it needs done too.

New iteration of PU not being considered even though it's meant to be there for test Tue/Wed then it cannot be mature enough to use in race conditions. Convinced that it's Russia GP at a push but Spain more than likely for new PU. All depends on the data from test and resulting improvements.

The Honda PU is simply useless, really hard for the team.

Just when I thought we'd seen the worst... Not even starting a race. I can't even remember a car not starting the race (except due to crash).
