Myself and sombrero have discussed this for a while and his latest contributions in the quiz-thread got me all wet,
so here is the thread where you can post you most p*rnographic of engine-images totally shameless......

This thread was started to show photos of interesting engines. So, at the request of the OP, please try to steer this back to photos of interesting engines rather than a free-for-all discussion of engine technologies.

p.s. I've just renamed this to reflect that it's intended to be an engine photo gallery.

At a guess I would say supercharging from the piston downstroke. Looking at the other side of the engine, some water jacket lines can be seen. I count three inlets and three outlets (the chrome manifold at the top, and the cast manifold at the bottom). There appear to be three extra rectangular ports at the base of the cylinder block. Unless a component has been removed, I see nothing resembling tradition types of superchargers.

Since the intake appears to be a side port valve in the cylinder wall (whatever the term is) some crossflow (upstroke) and compression (downstroke) could occur across the cylinder beneath the piston, between the intake ports & mystery ports on the opposite side. A reed valve or port locations might prevent backflow into the intake manifold.
