Re: Ron Dennis

I have a VERY strong dislike for Ron Dennis, but he set out to do a very tough job and he succeeded admirably. He has helped move F1 away from the "garagist" era (to use an Enzo F term) to a much more business-like level (and I'm ambivalent about whether that transition is positive or negative).

I think the problem with Ron Dennis (at least my problem) is that he seemed to happily embrace F1's becoming a business as opposed to a sport, while others (Williams, Head, Jordan) did what they had to do, kicking and screaming or simply faded away (Tyrell).

I will not miss him, but Ron Dennis deserves much of the credit for McLaren being one of the great teams of modern F1.

Its a sad day for everyone who hates lying and cheating teams, who twist and turn reality so much your head spins. Having said that God punishes immediatly and therefore Lewis and mclaren, will again win nothing this year.

No, it is a very good day, he has brought a lot to F1 and at least Ron is one of the few to stand up to Mosley, well at least try to.

How can you be so negative for someone that brought so much for a sport that we all like? Liar, cheater, whatever... the day you bring more than he did to motorsports, then you can become judgmental. Whether we like him or not, he's there and he's working hard to make his team work even harder. That's the way of success and that's why we like to watch it.

And if you think all the other times are all-saints-whatever-that-never-cheated-or-did-any-harm, well, you are just plain innocent (being very gentle here).

What great did he bring to the sport then? Can you name a few examples? All i can think of examples he worked AGAINST our sport, and was ridiculed by mosley(and a lot of other teambosses) for that reason.he was against cost cutting, test miles cutting, budget cutting, curbing of engine technology, a host of spectacle enhancing features like the new qualify regulations. He introduced the pit box screens and while Prost had a deal with Haug over the free supply of customer ilmor engines, dennis blew the deal by demanding exclusive rights december 2000, aiding the downward spiral and eventually exit of his old driver, his old advisor Alain Prost. Then we had 2007...

It seems to me that curbing engine technology and the new qualifying scenario work aainst the principles of the sport.

While i would also like to see the ferrari V12s back, the cutting of several of those engine regulations made sure the whole field is very tight, made sure teams like Renault, Williams, str, Force india, aguri are still in F1. It made sure teams like mclaren and ferrari cant just buy their way to a championship, wich also goes against the spirit and principles of the sport. That has provided a field with close racing wich many agree, last year was one of the best in a long time. As many said 2006 was very good too. Apparently the engine technology cut is not a deciding factor to make sure we see some good racing. (I also remember times when most of the field used Ford V8 DFVs and nobody got upset over breaking principles;). In that respect its Mosley 1 - 0 Dennis. And Flavio, the teamboss with 2 consecutive titles behind his name, also wanted and wants even more changes to provide a better 'show' for us, the fans. That is something ul never hear Dennis say. It is one of the reason i hold Briatore in higher regard.

What's your point? First you agree with the engine rules by stating that it helps some teams to stay, and then again you'd like V12s back...

Ron Dennis is certainly not a bad factor in F1, and for the cost cutting measures it is always Ferrari that is holding off the boat. Ron Dennis and McLaren are, despite being wealthy, usually cooperative to cost cutting.
If you cannot agree with that and the fact that cost cutting, when implemented well, is good for F1, then you simply have your facts wrong and there is nothing more to discuss.

From a technical point of vieuw id like to see the V12s or any other variety in engine configuration back. And in some ways I agree with Tom it goes against the prionciples of the sport. But from the point of vieuw of safety, cost cutting and increasing closer racing Mosley was dead right to implenet those changes.

I think dennis is a bad factor for F1. The other poster said he has brought good things to our sport. My question was, what are those great things? Im like a sheep in the valley of darkness. If you can show my deluded vieuws are wrong then ill readily accept that.

Until then Ill follow the facts as forementioned: Mosleys beef with Dennis the last few years, came down to Dennis and mclaren refusing to sign up for big changes to improve safety, the show and the spectactle for the fans. Not ferrari, as mosley has said several times they are cooperative, but Dennis was the main factor delaying many of changes wich now prove to be good for the sport. Dennis was the one fighting stoddarts minardi. Dennis was the one refusing to let mercedes build customer engines. Combine that with the 2007 events and the shady nature of his supposed equal team orders draws me to teh conclusion he is bad news for F1. You dont have to agree with that. You can even try to change my point of vieuw by giving examples what Dennis did for good to the sport. Does he plant flowes in the paddock? Does he go to Sir Franks house every sunday to mow the lawn? Im curious! :)

thats the point Tomba was making, they are not facts and no matter how much you dislike RD, you would know that (if you know as much about F1 as you claim). I am curious to know where you get your facts(?) though.
Long experience has taught me this about the status of mankind with regards to matters requiring thought. The less people know and understand about them, the more positively they attempt to argue concerning them; while on the other hand, to know and understand a multitude of things renders men cautious in passing judgement upon anything new. - Galileo..

Unless when the man speaks these things in live intervieuws arent facts, i am entitled to believe what he says is the truth. The accusations Dennis did everything to hold back these changes came from Mosley himself. The other events have been covered widely in various media. Autosport brought the story dennis himself withdrew the customer engine deal for prost, autosport brought the story ecclestone himself banned the mclaren introduced pit box screens. F1-live brought the story about dennis admitting he GAVE team orders at melbourne 97. The stoddart thing is also widely covered. About the 2007 events do you really want me to give links to various FIA sites and pages? Any well informed F1 fan should know about these facts.
