Possibility for 2018 Mclaren Renault.
Suzuka. They'll have at least one power unit ready to go by then. Question is, do they take penalties at their home race? If I were them I would. It's going to be painful watching them race in Spa and Monza.

Let's hope the chassis updates can deliver a tenth or two in Hungary, and they can eek out another tenth or two from the current power unit in the mean time. They're on the cusp of being able to score points regularly, it's so frustrating to watch. At the very least let's hope reliability has taken a step forward. Getting the gap under 1.7 seconds makes them the 4th best team.

How about we stop with this rubbish, eh? Everyone knows Mclaren is sticking with Honda, Ferrari/Merc not interested and Renault engine isn't good enough to win races. Better to stop the Mclaren to Mercedes, Mclaren to Renault junk rumors.
The only thing that is rubbish is Honda.

Mclaren NEEDS to bulid their own engines or invest in Rikardo.
Why would you think McLaren (who have zero engine building experience alone) would be any better off...
Also why would heavy investment into Ricardo be any better than Honda?

These claims are more absurd than anything else suggested. It's all based on absolutely zero evidence they could get the job done. McLaren might have a couple supercars and Ricardo might supply some turbo V8's (with all due respect to the company), but that does not translate into a definite, immediately successful F1 entry. What a gamble.. and a ludicrously costly one at that.
I always thought there should be 2 types of entries allowed in F1. Either a Chassis or PU developer. You should not be allowed to create both. So the Ferraris, the Mercs and Renaults would have to choose. It creates a 2 tier system which is part of the problem. Ferrari isn't out to make sure all the teams with a Ferrari PU win just the main team. In fact they might go as far as hindering those other teams. The rest of the teams are just there to show a semblance of competition.

they could do it last year but the compressor size would be a negative they'd always fall short of power
now they intered 2017 season with the merc layout plus more compact size and they will start harvesting their efforts in 2018.
para bellum.

So how did RBR win in Azerbaijan?

Also, let's not forget, last year they finished ahead of Ferrari, and were the only other race winners besides Mercedes.

I'm not saying the Renault PU is great, but I believe it is good enough to win races when Mercedes isn't batting a thousand, and I wouldn't be surprised if it leapfrogged Ferrari's PU next season.

That Ajerbaijan win was purely down to luck...sure u have to be there to take advantage but Vettel got a penalty and Ham had that freak issue.
Never Give up.

I count three? Canada = electrical, Azerbaijan = oil pressure, Austria = collision damage

Seriously, that Renault PU is not as bad as some make it out to be. Surely, nowhere near Merc, but not that far behind Ferrari.

I think the point here is Renault is in no greater a position than Honda to guarantee a certain level of performance. So why bother.
