From this video, it seems that the Ferrari keeps its short gearing:

Jerez is not so good for simulation, Estoril was used in the 90´s because it was a good all around track... might be a better track to simulate different tracks of the championship

So Alonso says “six teams are in deep trouble” after day 1 and McL is not one of them of course...any idea what he’s talking about? I assume he means the non top-4 teams...

Personally I would like to seem them go somewhere we don't race. Change it up often could help assess new tracks that want to have a race.
Drivers could help organisers develop tracks if they find problems.

But it has to be somewhere warm and preferably not too far removed from the factories. That does not leave too many options open.

Well Spain is good for no one's factory and is not that much warmer than just using Silverstone which is on the door of all but 3 teams.

Heat only really affects tyres anyway so if we used a track that's not on the calendar it wouldn't matter as much. No team would be that bothered about tyre performance. Aero and engine work can still be done.

If you want tyres in the right window it's almost impossible without flying long distance. Maybe have a full week of practice at Australian just for tyre work.

I hadn’t said it is a bad idea, I see what you mean, I like the rotatian idea very much. Heat is not per sé needed to me but snow and ice free guarantee would seem Nice, or even little rain as that is also not very beneficial (teams get too scared to break their one and only available car).

The quote I saw said was something like "these teams had big problems today", he's just trying to deflect attention away from their hub issue.

Quite possibly. McL official summary of the day seemed to really downplay the wheelnut issue as well. I’m inclined to take them at their word for now because if it’s a real issue in the coming days, it will become very very clear that they lied.

Well if the failure was just a random defect and when he went out again it was the same part design used and it lasted then there shouldn't be any issues.
If they have had to revert to a old design then this could affect them but I don't imagine there is a great deal of lap time in a slightly different wheel nut design apart from a tenth at a pit stop.

If it was a huge issue we wouldn't have seen them out again

Personally, I'd prefer Bahrain like they did in 2014!

Was aiming for closer place, but with temps there teams could do more testing / dev.

Lots of cars having moments in turn 1/2, that includes the ferrari at 4:41. Though from what I've seen on the official stream it did look by far the most planted of the cars running at that time (no red bull though).

@2:43 why is McLaren testing last season's car?
