McLaren MCL33

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This sidepod deflector looks so basic. I believe they are trying to understand the whole sidepod deflector concept better in this couple of races.
What's basic about it? Lack of slots? Surface area? 3d shape of the aerofoil?

I'm perplexed to hear people say it's basic or not complex enough without even understanding what the device is attempting to accomplish. Ever stop to think that maybe having it extend to the floor may negatively interact with other features of the car downstream? The car isn't in it's final form but it's not underdeveloped, and the people in McLaren aren't clueless. Think of it this way while everyone rushes to bolt on parts, then having to re design them, and make countless iterations for marginal gains, McLaren is being methodical and introducing a big update in one go.

In the mean time they make small detail adjustments to get things to work better. I'd say the aero of the McLaren is good but has the potential to be great, it just needs refinement.

What is the triple dot protrusion thing between the stegosaurus vortex generators and the X/pod wing?

Is that a camera or mounting point for a potential aero piece?

That is where the old deflector connected

Fact that they are keeping it means they plan to add more elements to it at a later date or don't have the resources for a new engine cover.

I could be wrong but wasn't their talk of McLaren bringing a new nose this weekend? Anyone spotted it yet, or was it delayed?

I believe it's for Spain.

Yeah Spain was the target for the nose.

Some other bits might come in Baku.

last week it was smoothed over, and this week it has 3 holes drilled. maybe that points to them adding something there soon. but probably dont want to drop the cash for a new side pod either.

There's probably just a clip in cover for it.

Maybe some hot air can escape out of the holes to help with cooling ?

A close-up of the rear brake duct fins on the MCL33, which directly increase downforce but also have an impact on the surrounding flow structures.
