Mercedes not hanging about 1.4 seconds clear of the next car on the softs, i'm sure that will change when Ferrari put on the super softs given their allocation

The merc looks quick. I was always felt that once we get back to the higher temps of the european season they'd suddenly come alive. It's really not great that the other teams haven't been able to capitalise on Mercs early form. Hamilton's leading the championship despite having a terrible time of it. If these warmer temps mean the car is hooked up for the rest of the season, we could lose the great competition we looked like having.

Early time, I still see if dry in Q3 a pole by Ferrari by at least 0,2-0,3 s.

Merc, Ferrari and redbull all look solid onbord. Sure, merc is well ahead - as they were on Friday in China and Baku (I believe?)

It’s anyones game at the moment. Ferrari usually turn the engine on from Saturday onwards, so I see it being as close as ever.

I’m also always very cautious to call it after one session. Ferrari fans (of which I am one) have a terrible reputation for this. They’re a second behind Mercedes - THE RACE IS OVER THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS LOST FIRE EVERYONE...

Yeah, Mercedes was well ahead after FP1 in both races mentioned, but when FP2 comes, somehow the gap is closing until they are not the fastest car anymore.
I think Ferrari is playing games here again, FP2 will shed light on it.
Kudos to McLaren, let's hope it really works as it seems.

Mercedes were not well ahead in China and Baku FP1 that gaps were just 0.351 and 0.035 respectively. This session on the same tyre (soft) that gap was a massive 1.7 seconds before Ferrari bolted on the SS and brought it down to 0.950. It will come down more FP2 and the order might swap but its definitely different than the previous few races so far.

But the 0.035 in Baku was between Mercedes and redbull. Ferrari were nowhere.

My point is only to say - nobody knows what’s going to happen. It’s fp1. Nothing more, nothing less.

I love speculating, but I dislike when people confidently assert what the situation is without actually knowing. This may well mean Mercedes is ahead, as you say the gap is quite large.... now, we wait and see.

Wow! Impressive 3.4 seconds improvement from last year (average of the field)!
With Sauber having the biggest gain, 4.2 seconds.

It is really cool, that goes without saying. However, most of that would be down to tarmac/softer tyres.

Still much more time to come. Vettel did a 1:17:182 in testing (although probably with hyper-soft tyres?)

This sounds strange, because Mercedes has been always good with colder temperatures, not the opposite. And Ferrari has always liked high temperatures.

Its more that Mercedes loves this track, but I doubt the difference will be that big, though I expect to see Mercedes ahead in this race.

Williams looks awful, at least Kubika shows again he is faster than this teammates.

Only a reprimand for Magnussen.
